Be Careful, For My Sake

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

The Magic Man, Dr. Jonathon Baxter, was sitting in his back yard when Dwight’s call came in.

“Tanner took out your first hitter.”

“Tell me how he did it?”

Dwight went on to describe how Tanner lured Billings to the rear of the restaurant.

“Are you sure he’s dead?”

“He’s not answering his phone, so I doubt he’s all right.”

“Tell me your impressions of Tanner.”

“I only saw him at a distance, but I see what people mean about those eyes of his. The guy looks like no one you want to fuck with.”

The Magic Man rose from his seat to grab a watering can.

“He’s met his match in me. I’ll place a call. Tanner will be facing multiple opponents next time.”

“More than one guy?”

“There are three of them; they’re young, work together, and are said to be quite lethal. They should give Tanner more trouble than our friend Billings did.”

“When will they contact me?”

“They’re already in New York City; I’ll have them call you within the hour. I’ll also let them know to expect Tanner to come at them circuitously. The man seems to be fond of misdirection.”

“And what if these guys fail, what then?”

“I’ll be upping the talent. Fontaine is on his way to New York City; he should arrive there tonight.”

Dwight laughed. “You’ve sent him here? I guess you don’t expect much from the three guys we’ll be using.”

“They may succeed but given Tanner’s reputation I thought it prudent to send Fontaine.”

“Oh, yeah, he’s good, and he just handled that lawyer, Rupert.”

“Fontaine is excellent, and with you helping out, I expect Tanner to be dead by tomorrow.”

“I hope so, the guy worries me.”

“Be careful, Dwight. You would be hard to replace.”

“I like you too, Jonathon, and you’re fun to work for.”

“Keep in touch.”

After putting his phone in his pocket, Baxter began watering his plants. He was getting paid a hundred-thousand dollars to kill Tanner, and he never even had to leave his home. As he recalled Dwight’s words, worry lines appeared on his forehead. After setting down the watering can, he called his assistant back.

“What’s up?”

“Don’t take any more chances by trying to observe Tanner up close. Let Fontaine take the risks.”

“All right, but I still want a crack at Tanner if everyone else fails. Whoever pulls the trigger on him will be famous in the underworld.”

“We’ll see, just make certain that he doesn’t get to you.”

The Magic Man wasn’t worried about Dwight’s safety; he was concerned that Tanner might torture his assistant and make him reveal the Magic Man’s location.
