Chapter Twenty-Nine

Alexi’s anger grew as the conversation went on. The fury that came over her brought a growl from her cat. Her nails grew to claws on the desk.

Those were the people behind the hit on Mojo. Nine and Black Raven.

Alexi drew in a slow breath and released it as she got to her feet, hands clenched into fists. She couldn’t believe what had been going on right under her nose and how those bastards were gloating about it.

“Boss.” Max was at the door as she fought not to put her fist through the wall.

“Max, give me a minute,” Alexi said. “Keep Tia out if she comes down.”

“What’s wrong?” Slate asked.

“Max,” Alexi snarled.

“Out and understood,” he said.

Alexi battled her cat for control as it fought to get free, vengeance its only thought. She could feel the calm energy of Slate that held only a slight edge.

She breathed in and out several minutes allowing the calm to fill her. Then, she turned to find Slate leaning against the door.

“What’s got your tail in a twist?” Slate asked carefully.

“Slate, if I ask you to hang back, do it. This thing that I’m going to do is going to involve killing some women. Your success rate there isn’t good.”

“I won’t let you go anywhere alone,” Slate told her. “So, you’re either taking me, you’re ordering the hit, or you’re taking Kendall with me in the car.”

Alexi gave her a curious look. “Why are you being so dogmatic about this?”

“You hired me to watch your back,” she said. “After working with you I respect you, I know you have a good heart that you like to hide. Zoe may be your bestie, but I’m your road dawg. It’s ride or die.”

“You can’t pull the trigger,” Alexi said gently.

“I’ve never seen you like this,” she said. “You never lose your cool even when you’re staring down a bullet. Whatever it is has to have caused you great pain. So, I’m there.”

Alexi nodded and moved to her desk. “Max.”

Max came in a moment later with Tatiana on his heels.

“Alexi, what’s going on?” Tatiana demanded, concern in her voice.

“Tia, honey, it’s nothing,” she said evenly. “Just give me a few minutes. Max, I need some SDs.”

Max vanished and returned with a handful of plastic containers that held individual cards. “Emma wants to know if you want breakfast to go?”

“Tia, handle that,” Alexi said.

“Slate, do you want coffee or something?”

“I’ve had breakfast already,” she said.

Tatiana gave Alexi a look. “Coffee then?”

“Cream with a dash of sugar,” Alexi answered. The animal was clawing at her mind as she forced herself to remain in control.

When Tatiana left, Alexi began making copies of the video and the other files. She hadn’t viewed them, but she didn’t want to risk losing them.

“Slate, I’m not going to handle this all myself. I’m giving you a chance at deniability. Take it. Nine is going to explode and when shit hits the fan White isn’t going to be the only one breathing down my neck.”

“I’m already a target just by being your guard,” Slate told her.
