Tuesday arrived in typical California style: clear blue sky with not a breath of wind. With the arrival of the sun, the air had relinquished its frigid bite and allowed itself to be gradually warmed to a more agreeable temperature.

Maddox was quick to capitalize on the conditions. He sprang out of bed and quickly donned shorts, running shoes and a lightweight sweat suit top. He swallowed a glass of orange juice and left the condo.

A short climb up Cliff Drive brought him to level ground, and he started off jogging at a leisurely pace towards Heisler Park. His run would take him down to the main beach then along the sand southeast for a mile or two—an old, familiar route. Nothing like a good run to brush away the cobwebs, clear the head, and build up an appetite for breakfast.

One hour later Maddox stepped out of the shower and toweled himself dry. The heating was on, so he merely put on the bottom half of the sweat suit and went to the kitchen. This morning he would give himself a treat—two fried eggs, easy over, with a decent helping of bacon, toast with apple jelly, and a cup of steaming, hot coffee. Today he would pamper himself, for who knows what the day held in store. Whatever happened, he wanted the morning to be pleasurable.

But not too pleasurable: He had some business to take care of as well. He still needed four more hours of Continuing Education credits to fulfill the requirements for renewing his pharmacist’s license. The license was due to expire in three months and he had been tardy in applying himself to the task of getting those units out of the way. This would be a good time to knuckle down to some work. It would also help pass the time until his meeting with Janine, help distract him from what lay ahead.

By midday he was done. The CE was completed, signed, and in its envelope, ready for mailing. Time to get moving.

He decided to dress up for the occasion. He donned his newest shirt, bottle-green with just the barest touch of thin, yellow stripes, slacks in a muted shade of beige with socks to match, and off-white loafers. An olive-green sweater rounded off the ensemble. He checked his reflection in the mirror—face shaved and hair combed.

Gotta look good for the execution.

It was still too early for the meet, so he went to the California Pizza to kill time. A slice of pepperoni and a cup of herb tea would fill the time admirably. By 1:45 he was done. He paid the bill and strode slowly to his rendezvous, past glitzy stores and fountains, hustlers selling their wares out of small, tented stalls or barrows, past the pond filled with koi and into the building where the food court was situated.

He passed more stores, all displaying the latest in trendy clothing—mostly women’s fashions. He did not even glance at the wares. Maddox stepped onto the down escalator
