âIt looks like you will have to stay the night,â I said, watching Claire at the window. Her eyes were staring at the falling snow. It had built up all day and there was no way she would make it out of the driveway, let alone down the highway.
âI can get the spare room ready,â I added.
She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head, looking back at me. âI can sleep on the couch,â she whispered.
âAbsolutely not. Thereâs a spare room for a reason,â I told her. Her sleeping on the couch was unacceptable.
âI donât want to put you out,â she argued, and I shook my head.
âClaire⦠if you demanded to sleep in my bed alone, that might be the only issue Iâd have.â I laughed lightly before returning to the kitchen.
The dinner dishes were in the sink and I knew they could wait till the morning. I opened the cupboard and pulled out a package of cookies.
On my way back to Claire, I hit the power button on my stereo. Soft music started playing, and I smiled when she looked over her shoulder.
âWhen I was at the store yesterday, I picked up something you said you loved. Now seems to be the perfect time to open them up,â I said as I presented her the package of her favorite cookies.
Claireâs face lit up with a big smile. My heart did a few more flips, and I wished I could always make her smile like that.
âYou didnât have to do that,â she said sweetly.
âI know I didnât have to. I wanted to,â I insisted.
When she didnât take the package, I took it upon myself to open them. I held it out for her to take some. After she did, I took one and then set the package aside.
âThese arenât bad,â I said after having a bite.
Claire gave me a closed mouth grin. She was too busy eating cookies to reply.
âYou look cute, Cookie Monster.â The compliment came out before I could stop it. I realized then that I didnât mind if Claire knew what I thought about her.
âYouâre sweet,â she chuckled. There was a faint blush on her cheeks and I found her even more adorable.
âDonât let that get out. I canât have everyone know that Iâm not always a grump.â I gave her another smile.
The song changed on the stereo and a silence settled over us. I started to wonder if I was flirting too much. It was becoming clear that I needed to give her some space. If she was staying the night, I wanted her to feel comfortable.
âDo you dance?â She asked.
It took me a second to take in what she said. I thought for sure she'd tell me to get lost.
âDance⦠uh kind of,â I finally answered.
Claire laughed and reached out to take my hand. She pulled me to the center of the living room and put her free hand on my side. I watched her as she started to move her body but then stopped.
