That evening, it was late by the time Martha finally entered her bedroom. Sheâd drafted her letter to the First Lady, would check it through tomorrow and then send it off in her lunchtime break. Her heart was still full of gratitude that Papa had lent her his support.
She reached up and turned on her bedroom light. She frowned. A letter sat on her dressing table, on a small white plate that Papa had said once belonged to her mother.
Martha came forward to pick it up. It was postmarked Scotland, but the writing was not Clydeâs. She fell back down on her bed and, her hands fumbling, she tore the envelope open with her bare fingers. Her eyes flew to the bottom of the letter.
Kirsty Fraser. Clydeâs sister.
Marthaâs heart stilled.
