CHAPTER 14

“Ye did what?” Lady Ross’s voice rang so much between the stone walls that Kit nearly turned and fled the other way.

“Don’t ye dare,” Niall commanded over his shoulder.

Kit was forced to stay still, watching as Lady Ross stood in the hallway of the house, glaring at the three of them in the early morning light. Behind her were the earl and Abigail, and all three were in various states of dress, having heard the horses return.

“Urquhart? Are ye sure?” the earl said, stepping forward. There was clear hope in his voice. Abigail listened too, as she twisted her hair into a plait.

“That is what this man said,” Kit replied. “There is only one way to be certain, though. We go to the castle.”

“Oh, in the name of the wee man and all his angels!” Lady Ross tossed her hands to the sky and marched away across the hall, before pacing back toward them. “Ye have all just returned from one dangerous trip, and now ye wish to go off on another?”

“Nay,” Niall and Rhona said together, making Kit’s shoulders slump.

“I may be a fool, but I am not hoping for my own death,” Niall explained succinctly. “I would not go there, Ma.”

“Neither would I.” Rhona shook her head and reached for the nearest door. “I need something to drink.”

“Aye, so do I after hearing of this chaos!” Lady Ross snapped and followed her daughter into the sitting room. “Rhona, how could ye do this? The danger ye were in … unthinkable!”

“All clouds bring not rain, Ma. It was just a tavern. It was nothing we have not seen before.”

The voices began to drift away as the two ladies left, followed closely by Niall and the earl.

Soon, only Kit and Abigail were left in the hall. Kit stood very still, and Abigail stared at her, still fidgeting with her hair.

“He’s there? Truly?” she asked, her manner so anxious that Kit couldn’t help offering a smile.

“At least now we have hope, Abigail.”

Abigail smiled back with evident relief.

“Abigail!” At Lady Ross’s bark, Abigail hurried into the room. “Katherine, I hope ye are coming too.”

Kit couldn’t hold back her laugh, though she lifted a hand to cover her lips as she followed them into the room. Lady Ross’s outbursts felt a little soft compared to Walsingham’s.

“Ma, Kit is her own person. She does not have to follow your orders,” Niall reminded his mother.

Lady Ross didn’t argue, but she crossed toward Kit and took her arms. Kit was so startled that she stood very still, her eyes going wide. All Lady Ross did was spin Kit around, apparently examining her.

“Nay injuries? Nay damage?”

“No, my lady,” Kit said, turning back to face her.

“By blood and this light, thank God for that.” Lady Ross exhaled loudly then stepped forward and embraced Kit.

Stunned, Kit didn’t move. She stood there like a wooden plank, unsure what else to do. She couldn’t remember the last time she had hugged someone. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she rather suspected Doris had given her a few hugs when she was little, but that was many years ago.
