She would soon be a divorcée, an accused adulteress, a disgraced woman. That did not make her a fallen woman, and she would not become one. Not even for Guy.

Still, fury at the injustice of it all burned inside her. A woman had no rights. Edmund was accusing her of infidelity and as long as he found two witnesses he would be believed. She could not even testify in her own defence.

She turned to her side, then, unable to get comfortable, propped herself up on the pillows. The fire burned orange, its flames seeming like dancers leaping for the stars before falling back to earth. That was how she felt right now, wanting something she could never have.

Life was not easy. First the loss of her children… Her chest hurt to the point that drawing a breath was nearly impossible. She closed her eyes and forced her mind to keep thinking, willing away the emotional pain that nearly overwhelmed her. Then there was Edmund shaming her and dragging her reputation through the muck for his own ends. And now Guy. She loved him and it was too late. She was a woman with a reputation beyond the pale, and he was engaged to another woman. She did not think things could be worse.

With a sigh, she curled into a tight protective ball.
