Chapter Thirteen

Jeremiah was working on the sermon he was going to give on Sunday when a knock came at the door of his den. He paused, pencil hovered over the piece of paper he’d been writing on. Katie wouldn’t be coming here to read him one of those stories in the middle of the afternoon, would she?

“Are you going to open the door, or do I have to break it down?” came Mic’s familiar voice.

Jeremiah didn’t know if he was relieved or disappointed, but he decided not to dwell on it. He put the pencil down and hurried to open the door. “You’re a sight for sore eyes! I haven’t seen you in over a year.”

“It’s been fifteen months, but who’s counting?” Mic entered the den. “Lillian and Chet are talking to Katie and some of the children. I didn’t realize Katie was all grown up. Last time I saw her, she was still a kid.”

“It came as a surprise to me, too. Abby and Thayne haven’t brought her to town for a couple of years. They asked me to let her stay here so she can take her pick of which man to marry. Since we have the room at this orphanage, I said yes. The older women enjoy having her around. She’s been a big help. I have a feeling they’ll miss her when she marries.” He moved aside and waved him in. “Want to talk for a while before we join the others?”

Mic nodded and entered the room. “Besides Katie, has anything else changed?”

Jeremiah shut the door and gestured for Mic to sit in one of the chairs. “Did you visit Wade and Millie yet?”

“No. You’re our first stop. We’ll see Wade and Millie next.”

Jeremiah poured Mic some water and gave it to him. “Millie’s expecting again.”

Mic’s jaw dropped. “Again? How many kids do they have?”

Jeremiah sat across from him. “Let me see. There’s Lloyd, Alice, Mac, Rosemary, and Holly.” He mentally ran through the names a second time before adding, “That’s it. Except for the one Millie’s expecting.”

“Hmm… I was planning to stay there for a few days, but maybe I shouldn’t. There might not be enough room for me and my family.”

“Oh, of course there’s room. You can always stay in the den or library or the bunk house. It’s even nice enough outside to sleep outdoors.” Sometimes Jeremiah missed that. There had been moments in the past following the death of his daughter that the only time he felt at peace was out in the wilderness with nothing but the stars all around him. It’d been a good reminder that in the large scope of things, everything he went through was temporary. He turned his attention back to Mic. “You three can always stay here if you want. The main room is more than sufficient.”

“The plan was to come here, go to Wade’s and spend a couple of days there, come back here, do our shopping, go out to Abby’s for a couple of days, and then go back home.
