I hesitate before I open the report Grandmam Ivy filed all those years ago. I worry an alarm will go off, or a notification system has been programmed into the computer to send auto warnings to the Governors if controversial files are opened.

But then I remind myself, it’s better to find out now while I can pretend I didn’t know better, then spend the rest of my life regretting that I was too afraid to try. Grandmam Ivy always said that not taking a risk was just as much of a risk as taking one in the first place.

I scrunch up my eyes when I open the file, but nothing happens. The Governors don’t crash through the front doors, piercing alarms don’t sound, and Da doesn’t look up from his terminal with panic on his face. I sigh with relief. In my dream Grandmam Ivy said they couldn’t trace your movements if you just read the files, and I plan to do just that.

The main problem with Governor documents is that the words are too big and complicated, and the sentence structure is awkward. I think Governors write this way on purpose, to dull the senses so nobody will be alert enough to question the decisions they make. That way the Governors can invite people to read the report, but nobody in their right mind can stay awake to the end. I mean, I’m still on the first page and I can already feel my eyelids drooping. I shake my head to bring my mind back to the task of reading.

The paper authored and put forward by Ivy Keeper, which theorizes that the last known contact with the Outside was as far back as 400 OT years, and, further, which calls for the Governors to create a Research and Credibility Committee to examine the evidence she has allegedly compiled from research conducted in the Archives, has been officially denied by a unanimous council vote.
