The killer is close. They’re here, tonight, in among the crowd, hiding in plain sight. I sense it, can feel it all around me, oppressive in the atmosphere, a dark cloud descending, like impending rain. My empty guts are churning manically as I look out into the crowd of people gathered together to pay tribute to Amelie Fox, a sea of solemn eyes blinking back at me.

The crowd is a mixed bag of men and women, young, old, all ages, genders and race. Amelie moved in trendy circles, was on the peripheries of celebrity culture, a model and influencer, and tonight’s attendees for her candlelit remembrance include the young, attractive millennials she preferred to associate with, but there’s also people she grew up with too, the parents of the people she knew from childhood, neighbours, old schoolteachers, local shopkeepers… ordinary, everyday people, local people.

I’m acutely aware that my decision to mention a request for voluntary DNA samples tonight is something of a gamble. And no one more than my dearest number two makes this patently clear to me.

‘That was a bold move, boss,’ she says, rapidly blinking at me like I’ve had a full frontal lobotomy. ‘You do realise it could give our killer the heads-up, especially if it is a local guy we’re looking for. He could get scared and do a bunk. I mean, he could be here, tonight, in the crowd.’

‘Innocent people don’t usually run, Davis.’ I give her my wisest smile but she’s right of course. ‘A man with nothing to hide hides nothing. And if he does abscond, then it will be him giving us the heads-up, don’t you think?’

‘If you say so, boss.’ She’s shaking her head – the method to my madness.

‘And the killer is a local, Davis,’ I say unequivocally, ‘and they are here tonight, right under our noses, no doubt verbalising their condolences, hugging the Foxes, even speaking to the bloody press… which is why I need you and Parker to be extra vigilant.’

‘How do you know they’re here tonight, gov?’

I cast her a sideways look furnished by the lightest brow raise. She knows better than to ask me that question, so much so that she doesn’t even bother to wait for an answer.

‘Where is Parker by the way?’

I’ve requested his presence tonight because he’s got an exceptionally keen eye. He’s an unassuming sort, doesn’t say much, but when he does, it’s usually worth listening to – a rare quality – and something of a gift, not least in this game. Parker seems to possess an innate ability to read people correctly, qualities that if used correctly could see him go far in this business.

I spot him, beckon him over.

‘Boss?’ he addresses me keenly, his youthful exuberance somewhat infectious, giving my increasing exhaustion a little lift.

‘I want both you and Davis to be extra vigilant tonight. Keep an eye out for any unusual behaviour, and any usual behaviour too, come to think of it. Watch out for body language, engage all your senses – eyes, ears and most importantly your gut.
