Thyroid Testing

Testing for thyroid problems can be straightforward or complicated. Most of the time a simple blood test, known as the TSH test, is adequate to determine if you have a thyroid problem. Thyroid experts agree that the TSH test is the best test when thyroid disease is suspected. TSH levels move in the opposite direction of thyroid hormones, so a high TSH level indicates low thyroid hormone levels. The TSH will start to go up before thyroid hormones drop below the normal range. Because of this, the TSH level is the best marker of early thyroid problems. The normal range for TSH depends on the laboratory, but for most labs the range is quite large. The truth is that most people need their TSH to be toward the lower end of the normal range, and TSH levels that are “high normal” are probably abnormal in most people. Other thyroid tests include ones for thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and thyroid antibodies. For more information on thyroid testing, please read my book, A Simple Guide to Thyroid Disorders: From Diagnosis to Treatment.
