Chapter 24

Cadence stood outside the courtroom door tapping her knees against her briefcase. For the third time since she had arrived, she checked her watch. She had asked Lieberman to meet her at eight-thirty. She liked being early, but she did not expect Lieberman to play ball. He was not entirely firm with his agreement. He had said more than once that he did not wish to spend a minute more in that courtroom than he absolutely had to. Expecting Lieberman to arrive at nine, she was pleasantly surprised to see him appear fifteen minutes earlier. What surprised her even more was that Kelly Lieberman was right by his side.

Kelly Lieberman had long amber hair that fell down to her shoulders. Despite the years, her beauty had been well preserved. Where once she would have been described as strikingly pretty, she was now strikingly handsome. Looking at her trim figure, enveloped in a tailored houndstooth skirt and jacket, Cadence had to ask herself what the hell do men want? A woman Kelly’s age could not look any more beautiful and yet her husband was so sadly prone to hooking up with younger women.

Lieberman had reported to Cadence that Kelly had taken the news about his mistress Phoebe Baker surprisingly well. Understandably, she was angry about his foolish and habitual weakness for such affairs and tore him to shreds. She told him there and then that their marriage was indeed over.

He told Cadence that he could not believe what followed. She said she would play the devoted wife and stand by him until the trial ended. She said she would do whatever she could to help him and that she hoped that he would not end up in jail. But whether he was found guilty or not guilty, the day the trial finished was the end date of their marriage. He would have to vacate the house immediately. She was done with him and from that day on she would be getting on with her own life. She would owe him nothing. She would take her half of the property. She would not ask for more, but she would have nothing more to do with his company. She would withdraw her money and if that happened to ruin Berrins then it was not her problem. Whatever his fate would be was not her concern.

Lieberman had related this exchange to Cadence over the phone. The tone of his voice was like nothing she had heard from him before. He was touched but baffled. He could not understand why she chose not to destroy him.

Grateful as he was, he felt there must be something he did not know, something that she was not telling him. When he had asked, she waved a hand and said that she saw things differently now. Some part of her was grateful that his affair was out in the open. It showed her what a farce their marriage was. It struck her that she had been acting
