Chapter Fifteen

Taryn, Levi, and Dawn stood back and watched as Vicky, Evan, and Nolan worked to get the post back into position. “I really am sorry that I interrupted your evening,” Dawn said sincerely. “I’m sure you were probably enjoying the wine and relaxing after the week you’ve had.”

Taryn smiled and raised her wineglass. “I still have this, and I am relaxed.”

“Are you Aunt Vic’s new girlfriend?” Levi asked, gazing up at Taryn with a grin.

“Son! You don’t ask personal questions like that,” Dawn said and tugged on his ear.

Levi was still grinning at Taryn and said, “You’re pretty like Allison.”

“She’s Vicky’s ex, they broke up a long time ago,” Dawn explained and changed the subject. “I hope you didn’t think we were being rude by leaving so soon after the funeral service. There were so many people there, and we felt like we were in the way.”

Taryn shook her head. “No, not at all, but it was nice to see some familiar faces in that big crowd.”

“There are three things that people in this town really turn out for—sporting events, festivals, and funerals. You’re kind of a celebrity around here. Everyone has always been fascinated with the Loudens. At the library, they have framed photos on the wall taken at parties your family used to throw at your house a long time ago during the flapper era. They have a bunch of the mill when it was in operation too,” Dawn said as she kept a hold on Levi to keep him away from where the others were working.

“Need your help, Dawn the Destroyer,” Evan said. “Come hold this.”

Dawn bent down so that she was eye to eye with Levi. “You stay right here with Ms. Taryn, and don’t talk about anything but baseball.”

“Aunt Vic says I’m gonna be a great pitcher,” Levi said, gazing up at Taryn. “I can hit, too, and I don’t even have to use a tee.”

“That’s really cool.” Taryn knelt down. “Your Aunt Vicky told me you’re going to join a team next season.”

Levi nodded. “Aunt Vic used to play softball, and Momma says she was a heavy hitter. Sometimes, I pitch to her, and she hits the ball over the fence. It’s a tennis ball ’cause we don’t wanna break no windows. Do you know how to play?”

“Not really. I used to play basketball though,” Taryn said and felt just a tad guilty over her next question because she was being nosy. “Did Allison play baseball?”

Levi laughed. “No, she was a sissy. She didn’t like to get dirty, but she said she liked it when Aunt Vic got dirty.”

Taryn’s brow shot up as she read into that statement and decided to change the subject before Dawn returned. “What else do you like to do?”

“I like to color, but I’m not supposed to talk about that.” Levi shrugged. “I like to eat and work with Aunt Vic and fish with Paw Paw. Do you have ghosts in your house?”

Taryn smiled. “No, it just looks creepy because it’s old and it needs to be fixed up on the outside.
