chapter 15

They arrived at the Roxland estate around four o’clock. Alice spent the majority of the drive cuddled up to her cowboy, their hands clasped and country music blaring on the radio, wishing for an eternal pause button that didn’t exist.

He pulled into the circular drive to drop her off before heading to the stables.

“So, when’s this pajama party commence?”

“Hilarious.”

He laughed and leaned over her to open the passenger door. “Well, what would you call it?”

“It’s just a casual girl’s night—last one before graduation.”

“Any chance I could stay in one of the guest rooms? I promise I’ll leave you to your pedicures and pillow fights. So long as you pay me a visit before the sun comes up.”

She leaned back. “Pedicures and pillow fights? How do you know we’re not drinking beer and playing poker?”

He lifted his hands in the air. “Hey, don’t blame me. Blame Hollywood. But if it is poker, just remember Olivia’s a ringer. Might as well save some time and give her your wallet.”

“Hmph. Who has pillow fights, anyway? Is that even a thing?”

He held her chin and planted a firm kiss on her mouth. “Maybe we should make it one. Just you and me.”

She smiled, the vision of the two of them and a pillow fight causing her butterflies to flutter and her locusts to buzz. “You’d lose. I play dirty.”

“Is that so?”

“Uh-huh.”

“What a coincidence. So do I.” He started tickling her, and kept going until she was squealing and squirming like a six-year-old.

“Okay, okay! Uncle! Uncle!”

He stopped, buried his head in her neck, and began placing tender kisses along her collarbone. His hands were beginning to roam when one of the horses neighed and kicked the inside of the trailer.

“Um, I think Max and Aggie have had it with us.”

“Fine.” He sat back as if offended. “Enough horsing around.”

“Wow. How long have you been waiting to use that one?”

He shot her one of his megawatt smiles. “Couple hundred years, give or take.”

She laughed in spite of herself. “Okay, old man. I’m going. I’ll see you at dinner.”

He grabbed her hand and kissed it as a horn honked behind them. When he jumped out to deal with Barry, she found herself staring at the empty seat he left behind, her heart aching for a future she could never have.

She sat on the bed next to him, watching him sleep. Behind closed lids, his eyes darted back and forth. He was dreaming now. She could only hope it was of something good. She ran her finger across his brow, smoothing a line that didn’t belong there.

“Alice, it’s time.”

She wiped away a tear and stood.

Olivia was standing in the doorway. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

Alice glanced at Colin one last time. No, she didn’t want to do this. But she was sure she had to.

“Yes, I’m sure. Lead the way.”

They walked in silence to a room two doors down. It was a small, square room with no windows. The walls were covered in a thick, dark fabric and the floor was strewn with pillows and overlapping rugs.
