AFTER ALL THIS timeâto end like this? Iscar watched Kel ride into the shadows. He sat proudly on the horse, only the stiffness of his body and his gravediggerâs shovel indicating that he was not some noble scion on a pleasure ride.
He swallowed, conscious of a bitter taste in his mouth. Once before, heâd allowed Kel to drop out of his life. Heâd told himself he did not care, that he was more concerned with his career than his heart, and for twenty years heâd believed it. Now⦠He saw the lie for what it was. No military triumph could warm a heart, nor wealth ease his mind. Could he let Kel go from his life a second time?
âAnd thus ends Warâs coming.â Zabul stepped onto the grass Kel had only recently occupied. âYou must be relieved, General, to be free of such a responsibility.â
Iscar ground his teeth. âDo not be so quick to dismiss War.â
Zabul shook his head, his smile pitying. âI should have thought the war-maker recognised a hopeless situation when he saw it.â
Iscar turned his gaze to Kel. If he could still hear their conversation, he gave no sign of it. He rode briskly forward. In a few moments, he would be lost from sight.
How is it possible a simple priest could do what he himself fearedâand a priest with no faith in his god at that? Kel did this not out of faith, but because he believed it was right.
Thunder shifted underneath him, restlessly. The horse longed to be in action. Iscar raised his head, saw his unit had gathered, and were waiting his orders. Something about the way they looked to him solidified vague thought into impulse.
âAnahiid.â Had he really allowed his pain to influence his treatment of her? This was the least he could do to make amends. âI desire a message carried to Skyâs temple in Celestial City. Let the priests know all that has happened thus far.â
Anahiid blinked. She started to ask a question but clearly thought better of it. âYes, sir.â
âWhere will you be that you canât take the message yourself?â Sol could be counted on to speak his mind.
Iscar placed a hand on Thunderâs neck, steadying him. âI ride with the priest.â
Anahiid gasped, pressing her hand to her mouth belatedly. âButââ
âSir! That is death!â Taroâs horse flicked its tail, echoing his riderâs agitation. âYou knowââ
âI do,â Iscar said. The prospect of death did not deter him. His place was beside Kel. Iscar only regretted it had taken him so long to see it. âAnd that is no reason to prevent me from seeing my duty through. I do not ask you to join me.â
âYou really intend to leave us?â Solâs voice cracked.
Had he been too quick to dismiss his second as self-interested? Iscar laid a hand on his shoulder. âAssume command in my absence. Wait for Kel and I in Setting. If we do not join you in two nights, continue to Celestial City without us.â
Sol gulped, putting his hand over Iscarâs.
