In about thirty seconds, Iâd shared everything I knew with Dominik and Jazmin. The near-death experience with the sniper at the track stadium, the crazy chase from Pushkinâs place that eventually led us to meeting Dominik, and especially the part about being chased by the Interpol agent, and how he was using local law enforcement to hunt down Natasha and me for the murder of Pushkinâa crime I did not commit.
The three of us had come to a new conclusion: we couldnât risk calling the police, even if a police car was last seen chasing down the van. That was likely directed by the Interpol agent, which meant we couldnât trust them. I hated the decision, because I knew that finding Natashaâfinding her aliveâseemed like an impossible task.
Until Jazmin offered up a new idea. She said that city cameras could possibly pick up the whereabouts of the van in which sheâd been taken. A friend sheâd made in her art class worked in the IT department for the Budapest police and had often spoken about his access to any and all data, including that from the camera system.
âLaszlo said the cameras are not reliable, and this hinders the police quite often,â she said.
Dominik turned his palms upward. âThen why did you bring up that idea? That is a waste of time. We need to think of anotherââ
âLet me finish. He bragged that he knew how to work the system to get the most out of it. He said it is still not perfect, but he has been able to track friends moving from Buda into Pest.â
Sheâd immediately put in a call to Laszlo. It rolled to voicemail, so she sent a desperate text. And now the three of us were pacing in her fatherâs office, waiting for a call back or an epiphany on how to help Natasha.
I paused and looked at Jazmin. âAnything?â
She shook her head as she swayed like a pendulum in front of the fish tank.
âWhy are you convinced your friend will help us?â I asked, doubt seeping in. âNatasha, like me, is a fugitive. Any employee of the police department will surely believe they should capture her, not help set her free.â
âFirst, Laszlo is not an idiot. I can explain what is going on. He will understand the danger Natasha is in and how we must find her. Second, I think he kind of likes me. Dad, I know you believe I have a lot of bad influences in my life, and maybe there is some truth to that, but Laszlo is a good person. He brings out the best in me. He has encouraged me to paint more.â
Dominik nodded. Jazminâs confidence in her friend gave me at least a bit of hope, but I couldnât contain my impatience.
âLook, I canât just stand here and do nothing. Iâm going to search the city by foot. Maybe Iâll spot the van.â I walked toward the office door.
âIt is good to be actively engaged, Jack, but do not carry false hope,â Dominik said.
