Chapter 7

Mac had just come home from Marisa’s cabin. He entered his room and tossed his hat on the bed and then placed his guitar on a straight-backed chair nearby. He thought about just going to bed, but he was restless with thoughts blowing around in his head like a spring storm.

Instead of getting ready to go to sleep, he decided to go around to the back of the cowboy motel to the rec room.

In the past two weeks, he’d spent the night with Marisa two more times. Each time had been as magical as the first. He wasn’t just falling in love with her, he was already there.

He loved Marisa with all his heart and soul. If he believed she was in the same place as he was, he’d be ready to ask her to marry him and spend her life with him.

However, he was pretty sure she wasn’t in the same place. Even though they’d made love again and he’d spent those nights with her, she definitely, continually, gave him mixed signals.

There were times when he felt like they were in the same headspace, but there were other times when he sensed her pulling away from him and he didn’t know why or what to do about it.

He was just a little bit depressed about it and there was nothing better to help than a little time with some of the other cowboys at the Holiday ranch.

Mac was the only one of the twelve original cowboys who still lived on the ranch. The others had their own homes to go to when the day’s work was over.

Tonight there were three men sitting in the room, drinking beer and talking. All three were hardworking, affable men whom Mac liked.

“Hey, Mac,” Eric Lee greeted him with a smile.

“Hey, boys, what’s going on?” Mac sank down on the sofa next to Brad Adams and across from Eric and Tucker Caldwell.

“Nothing is going on except a little drinking and a whole lot of bull talking,” Tucker said with a laugh. “Want a beer?” He gestured to the cooler of ice and beverages at his feet.

“No, thanks, I’m good. So, what were you all talking about?” Mac asked. He wanted any conversation that might get Marisa out of his mind for at least a little while.

“Humes’s men and how disrespectful and crappy they always are to all of us anytime we run into them in town,” Tucker said.

“Lloyd Green and Zeke Osmond are the absolute worst, but all of them are really hateful,” Brad said.

“They’ve been that way for years,” Mac said. Because all three of the men weren’t Bitterroot natives and had only recently come here to work on the Holiday ranch, Mac explained some of the history between Raymond Humes and Big Cass.

Years ago, when Cass’s husband was dying and she was trying to take care of him and keep the ranch running, Raymond had cornered Cass in her barn and had tried to rape her.

She had managed to get away from him, but not before she’d bullwhipped Raymond on his naked butt.
