Shit and derision! What should he do now? Part of him hated her for helping the German who had killed his friends but the rest still loved her and couldnât bear to see her upset. Sheâd been damaged enough by men whoâd mistreated her; he wasnât going to be one of them.
Today he was going to forget what he knew. Time enough for recriminations tonight. He would put things right between them. He didnât want her to think heâd changed because of what that rat Mayhew had done to her. Whatever happened he would never let the authorities arrest her. Somehow heâd come up with an explanation that would satisfy them. He didnât know if their relationship could survive what sheâd done, but seeing her crying made him understand just what she meant to him.
Despite her attempts to get away he was soon coasting along beside her. He reached out his right hand, leaving his damaged shoulder to take the strain, and gripped her handlebars. âStop, Hannah, you canât rush off like that. Youâve got it all wrong.â
âI havenât, youâve been off with me all morning. I donât blame you. Please, letâs not talk about it. We can still be friends, canât we?â
This was no good. He had to speak to her before they arrived at the farm. There was only one way and he wasnât sure his injured shoulder was up to it. He dropped behind her and grabbed the back of her saddle then applied his right brake, putting both feet down to give him added leverage. âStop, Hannah, you donât understand.â
Instead of braking, she pedalled harder. He couldnât hold on. He released his hold and she shot forward out of control and went sailing into the ditch. For some reason she hadnât released her hold on the handlebars and the bike landed on top of her. The only sound was of two wheels spinning wildly in mid-air.
Bloody hell, heâd not meant to knock her off, just get her to stop. He tumbled from his bike and dived into the ditch. He grabbed her bike, tossing it to one side where it crashed noisily on top of his own. She was lying on her back with her eyes closed. Her cheeks were tear-stained, her once immaculate dressing now muddied.
âHannah, darling, are you hurt? God, Iâm so sorry. I didnât mean this to happen. I just wanted you to stop so we could talk.â
Her amazing green eyes flickered open. For a second they didnât focus and then they blazed with fury. âWhat on earth are you playing at, you imbecile? Havenât I had enough accidents in the past ten days without you deliberately shoving me into the ditch like that?â She pushed him away.
âMove yourself, Flt Lt Rhodes. I would quite like to get out if you donât mind.â
He didnât move. Then before she could wriggle out of his grip he reached in and hauled her from the bottom of the ditch. âDonât be ridiculous, Hannah. Iâve said Iâm sorry.
