God, I hadn’t felt so comfortable and open with another guy—especially not one as sexy and funny as Arren-freaking-Sommers—in a long time. Maybe even ever. There was just something about Arren that gently pushed my nerves aside and put me at ease, and between his good-natured teasing and his goofy jokes, I’d laughed more today than I had in awhile, and that was saying something.

All I knew was that when Arren stood up and stretched, his arms reaching out to the darkening sky to make his t-shirt hitch up, showing a thin line of pale, smooth abs, my mouth watered. I couldn’t help it. That spark that we’d shared, that little moment, our blistering kiss imprinted into the back of my mind, made me hunger for more. More kisses, more conversations, more of his little touches. Oh, far more touching. Preferably with fewer clothes.

Ugh, I was so sunk.

Arren offered a lopsided grin and reached down to ruffle Maizy-Jane’s coppery fur. The pitbull’s tail thumped against the park bench that we’d sat down on probably hours ago. We’d abandoned the burger joint to walk across the street to the courthouse square. As I looked around, I saw that dusk had painted the little park in shades of deep orange and soft umber; the hues of the setting sun gave our little date a perfectly fitting afterglow.

A couple of hours in Arren’s company had felt like only a few minutes and I was already anticipating our next date. Would there be another date? Fuck, I hoped so.

“Well, Elijah. It’s getting dark out and we should probably head back. Did you drive to Pride today?” He looked about as disappointed as I felt. My stomach fluttered. I wasn’t ready to let him go and I had the feeling he felt the same. Slowly, I shook my head and his brows pinched together. “No?”

“Nope,” I said. “I came with my friend Rita, so my car’s at her place. Let me text her and see if she’ll swing past and pick me up.”

The words had barely left my mouth when Arren burst out, “I could take you home? If you wanted?” I glanced up at him to see that there was a strange sort of hopefulness glimmering in his eyes. My face heated up at the idea of Arren driving me home, because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to resist asking him to come in for a beer or two.

Or more. My heart kicked in my chest, nerves flooding back to life.

I smiled, suddenly feeling shy, and his brown eyes brightened and sparkled in the red hues of fading sunlight. “I’d like that, but only if you’re sure. I mean, you don’t have to. It’s kind of out of town.”

He shrugged a slender shoulder then tugged the hem of his vee neck back down almost self-consciously. “I don’t mind at all, sweet thing,” he said with a wink. He reached out and poked the tip of my nose with the pad of his forefinger.
