âYes, you, the murderers of Captain Gibson!â
Pieter and Karl Kip, paralyzed for an instant by such an abominable accusation, were about to respond in righteous indignation, when the magistrate cut them off saying:
âFlig Balt, your audacity exceeds all limits! And youâre imposing on the court â¦â
âIâm telling the truth.â
âAnd why, if it is the truth, did you not say so, right off?â
âBecause I did not learn about it until the return voyage. Then I was arrested when the James Cook docked, and I had to wait for this trial to accuse, publicly, those who were accusing me!â
Karl Kip was in an absolute rage, and in a thundering voice, like the voice of a captain in mid-storm, he cried out:
âMiserable ⦠miserable liar! ⦠Such accusations must be supported with proof!â
âI have it. The court can have it anytime it wishes!â responded Flig Balt.
âAnd what is your evidence?â
âJust go look in the valise that the Kip brothers retrieved from the Wilhelmina. There you will discover the papers and money of Captain Gibson!â
