Alkahest Alliance

“Cendrilla Perrault,” shouted Engel. “You and Armin will die on this mountain!”

Armin pulled on his earlobe, amplifying his voice. “Todd, have you lost leave of your senses? The Earl of Gewitter has pledged its loyalty to the crown. You betray your family with these actions.”

Rilla shook her head. She would bet her Kingdoms that Lord Engel had sent his son to Elf Mountain to apprehend them.

“There is no crown,” said Engel. “Just a family of imprisoned commoners with delusions of grandeur.”

The soldiers launched a missile into the mouth of the volcano. An almighty rumbling filled the air. The ground trembled, and small rocks flew into the air. Rilla held out her arms to steady herself. She was about to retreat into the shelter, but Dr. Streamer lost her footing and tumbled down the slope.

“Doctor!” Rilla stumbled after the tumbling witch, almost losing her own footing over the unsteady rocks.

Dr. Streamer rolled into a small boulder, and Rilla skidded down to reach the unmoving witch. The older woman lay on the black ground as limp as a ragdoll. Rilla swallowed and bent down to pick her up.

A deafening boom shook Rilla to the marrow. She turned, only to find what looked like fire exploding from the mouth of the volcano. It rushed down the mountain like an orange river, spitting out luminous, flame-colored globs. Massive blobs of lava rained down on them. Rilla’s face drained of blood, and her stomach plummeted. This was ten times worse than cursed hailstones.

“Your Majesty!” Captain Coyote slid down the slope.

“Go back to the shelter,” she cried. “I’m fine!” Rilla cradled the doctor in her arms, only to stumble forward.

The Captain grabbed the witch and held Rilla’s hand. “It is my duty to keep you safe, regardless of your wishes. Come, Ma’am.”

She exhaled, allowing her guard to drag her up the mountain. Tamping down her conflicting emotions about the ogre, she kept up with his fast pace. No matter how much the ground quaked, she didn’t stumble with him to keep her steady.

As they entered the shelter, a fist-sized ball of lava fell on Rilla’s shoulder. She flinched, bracing herself for the searing pain. Instead, a thin, white light covered her body, and the substance fell to the ground with a splat.

Miranda grinned. “The enchanted bracelets did their job.”

Rilla nodded. “I owe you a debt of thanks.”

The young witch flushed and pulled out another pair of leather cuffs. “Put these on, Your Majesty. Yours won’t work anymore.”

“Thank you.” Rilla turned to where Captain Coyote had laid Dr. Streamer on the seat. “Is she okay?”

The doctor squeezed her eyes. “It’s just a bump on the head. I was a little dazed from the fall. It’s nothing a swig of Liquid Invigoration won’t solve.”

“Are you sure?” Rilla furrowed her brow. The older woman seemed to be drinking a lot of that elixir. She made a mental note to speak to the ship’s doctor.

From the other side of the shelter, Madam Florian sidled up to Armin. “You must stop this madness, Your Highness.
