Hostage of the Taliban: 5 April 2002
Jack had taken cover behind a rock and was furiously photographing the action erupting all around him. Excited and on an adrenaline high, he didnât fully appreciate the predicament they were in. The officer in charge had managed to call for reinforcements on his radio and was hoping his men could hold out until help arrived.
The US patrol had been mopping up pockets of Taliban resistance in a remote part of the Shai-Kot Valley, when it walked into an ambush. Surrounded, outnumbered and under heavy fire, the patrol had nowhere to go; it was only a matter of time before the six men would be overwhelmed by the heavily armed fighters attacking them from all sides.
The helicopter bringing in reinforcements came in low and was about to land when a rocket struck its tail, sending the chopper into a spin close to the ground. Moments later, it hit a rock close to Jack and burst into flames. The men jumping out of the burning cabin were instantly mowed down by machine-gun fire, their bullet-riddled bodies falling like bowling pins.
Oblivious to his own safety, Jack continued to take pictures. As he was only a few metres from the burning chopper, he could see the pilot desperately struggling to open the door from the inside of the badly damaged cabin. He appeared to be the only one still alive.
âCover me, guys!â Jack heard someone shout from behind. Moments later, a soldier ran up to the chopper, opened the cabin door and was about to pull the injured pilot out into the open, when he was hit by several bullets from behind. Mortally wounded and still holding the pilot around the waist, he fell to the ground.
âGet back!â shouted a soldier next to Jack. âSheâs about to blow!â
After that, Jack did something most others would have considered insane. He dropped his camera and ran towards the burning chopper. First, he pushed the dead soldier off the injured pilot. Then he dragged the young pilot away from the burning wreck just before it exploded in a ball of orange flames, knocking him to the ground.
