CHAPTER SIXTEEN

That night at the motel, Alexa tossed and turned. The events of the previous few days swirled around in her mind, especially the horrible scenes in the video Ricardo had taken of his victim.

She could feel it happening again. She could feel herself slipping into the awful mindset of the animals she hunted. It was what made her career in the FBI, and it was what broke her as a person.

Her time at the FBI had been short, only two and a half years, and yet in that time she had run down several serial killers. Alexa had shown a talent for anticipating their next moves.

The only way she had been able to do that was to think like them. She had to put herself in their mindset, like what they liked, hate what they hated. It was like a dirty form of method acting.

It yielded results, but at what cost. Every day at work had led to a darkening of her soul, to the point where she could barely recognize herself anymore. The line between her thoughts and the thoughts of the animals she hunted became blurred. While that helped her catch them, it made her feel like a stranger inside her own head.

It got to be too much. The dark dreams, the evil waking fantasies. The reluctant familiarity with those who had killed so many and in such creative ways. She had to quit, leaving the East Coast to return to the familiar desert that she loved so much.

After a short lull of doing not much of anything at the family ranch, their old family friend Robert Powers had saved her by inspiring her to join the U.S. Marshal Service. He had known her since she was a kid, and knew she wasn’t a quitter. He told her that she could stay in her beloved Southwest, fighting the crime that threatened the way of life she treasured. It would be a more straightforward, cleaner form of law enforcement. She wouldn’t have to sully herself by having to think like the insane, only outwit common criminals. She had donned the new uniform with pride and a renewed self-confidence.

Only to get faced with the worst serial killer of her career.

That almost sent her fleeing back to the ranch, but Robert Powers’s strong assurance, his constant quiet mentorship, had bolstered her. It hadn’t been so bad facing down a serial killer when she had a man like him by her side.

But now, with Powers gone, she felt herself slipping again.

Turning over in bed, Alexa tried to relax, tried to clear her mind. If she didn’t get any rest, she’d never be able to work tomorrow, and this torture would continue.

Her spirit wouldn’t get any real peace until Drake Logan was behind bars again.

She pulled out her phone, wincing at the light it shone in the darkened room. 2:30. Ugh. She really needed to sleep.

Turning the phone’s brightness down, she opened the picture Stacy Carpenter had sent of herself standing and smiling between Smith and Wesson.
