‘I know you’ve had sex with someone,’ I blurted out, tailing him into the kitchen. By the time I got there, Rook was at the sink with his hands resting on the side, his head hanging low. I couldn’t tell if it was for shame, frustration, or embarrassment of getting caught out.

Then he turned, and the question answered itself.

Rook’s kind, lovable smile became something twisted and grim. He looked like a demon, grimacing under the fiery kitchen light. His eyes were hollow and lifeless, like he’d been holding back his true personality until right that second, when he finally decided to release his true nature. To release the monster within.

‘Yes,’ he said, taking two small steps towards the worktop, his hands resting on the sides. I was sharp enough to notice he was within reach of a knife block but too dumb to run just yet. ‘It’s been good sex. Great sex. Much better than the lazy crap you’ve been putting out.’

Tears instantly blurred my vision as I stood, speechless, on unsteady legs. I waited for him to snap out of it – to laugh and tell me this was just some cruel joke. Well, he did laugh, but it was no joke. Rook was finally showing his true colours, and what I saw was disturbing.

‘What’s the matter?’ he said then, his fingers walking like little legs across the counter, coming to rest on the hilt of the biggest knife in the block. ‘Cat got your tongue, or are you just too bloody pathetic to speak your mind? Seriously, give it a try. Grow a spine, at long last.’

I tried to find the right words, but one word breezed out on a short exhale: ‘Who?’

‘That’s none of your business, is it?’

‘I… I think it is.’ Nodding slowly, I tasted those words and confirmed it to myself, repeating them in my mind and standing up straight, pulling back my shoulders to convince us both that I was more than just a little girl. ‘No, it is my business. Tell me who.’

‘Wahey,’ he cheered with condescending pride. ‘There’s the real Fern. Glad you could finally show your face. It won’t get you very far though – you don’t know the girl, but she knows about you. After we screwed all night, we lay there laughing about how pathetic you are. About how you’ll do anything to please your precious man. Then we screwed some more, and here we are. She’s perfect, Fern. Much better than you, even if she does make me rubber up. But that’s a small price to pay for the world’s best sex.’

I’d heard the word ‘indecent’ many times in my life, but now I knew how it felt. My body had been used, my mind played with, and worse yet, I didn’t know how this would end. All I knew was that it would be my call. Rook would no longer have a hold on me.

‘I’m leaving,’ I said, then began to make steps towards the door.

Rook yelled at me to not move with such firm, violent dominance that it stopped me in my tracks.
