“I don’t want to be in here with everybody else,” somebody protests loudly.

“Neither do I,” another says. “I want to go to my room.”

“We need to stay together,” I reiterate. “It isn’t safe to wander around or be separated from each other.”

“You just said it yourself. Whoever did this is still here. It’s obvious that there is a killer among us, and I’m not going to sit here and wait for them to snap,” the man says. “We should be able to go to our rooms, lock ourselves in, and stay there. It’s better than being cooped up in a room with a murderer. At least then we’re not sitting ducks.”

“Yes, you are,” I say. “You would be even more at risk. Every one of the victims died when they were by themselves. I was attacked when I was by myself. The fewer people who are together, the higher the risk. Not a single one of us knows who is doing this or why. Or if there’s even just one person responsible. This situation is not up for debate. I understand your perspective. I know you’re upset about having to stay here, and I know you’re scared. But I also know how dangerous this situation is and that this is the best thing to do. If we’re going to stay safe and have any chance of finding out what happened, everybody needs to hold it together. Without access to the outside world, we are on our own.”

“If it’s someone here, then there has to be evidence somewhere,” Sarah says. “People don’t just kill other people without there being any signs.”

“She’s right,” Ethan says. “Whoever did this had a weapon. They would have left fingerprints or blood or something.”

“And you happen to have a fingerprinting kit sitting around?” Velma asks. “You’re just going to go dust for prints and then compare all of us?”

“Even if there was some way for us to compare fingerprints, that’s not viable. Several of us touched the generator and the dryer. Chances are, the fingerprints are damaged anyway. Besides, someone who conceals a body like that probably isn’t going to do it with bare hands,” I say.

“They were stabbed or their throats slit,” Clay says. “So there has to be a knife. That has to be somewhere.”

“We’re not going to take flashlights and search the mansion for a knife like some kind of fucked-up Easter egg hunt,” Declan says.

“I’ll search,” I say.

“Not by yourself,” Frances says. “You just said everybody needs to stick together. Nobody gets to wander off by themselves through the mansion. Especially you. You’ve already been battered by this person. You’re not going to go off into the dark by yourself again.”

“Unless somebody happens to notice a knife hilt sticking out of somebody else’s pocket, it was stashed somewhere,” I point out.

“And what is finding it going to tell you?” she asks.

“Who used it,” Velma says. “If we find it in their room.”

Everybody turns to her. She still looks shaken and distraught, but now there’s anger in her eyes.
