Reading Practice
It is essential for a writer to also be a reader. For most of us, this is a delightful task. We know our reading preferences, and the books we love to read usually steer us to the kind of writing we naturally want to do. This is not always so; a writer of crime fiction might relax by reading romance or biography. Even so, that writer will have completely immersed himself in the genre of crime fiction before attempting to write his first novel.
I can feel overwhelmed in a bookshop or library full of reading treasure. Because of that, I really love it when people recommend books for me to read. This takes me away from authors and genres I am used to, sending me off in different directions to new favourites. As I read, I am adding to my storehouse of words, and learning how other writers create story and atmosphere in ways that are impressive and inspiring.
To say I am fond of poetry would be an understatement. I suppose poetry is like the secret, passionate affair in this love story of words. Poetry is a major literary genre in itself, with many subgenres and important âmovementsâ. For anyone who likes to write poetry I make a plea: do please read poems too. Go to a bookshop or library and pick up a book of poems by someone youâve never heard of. Open it at random and read a verse or two. If this doesnât appeal, try another book until you find something resonates with you. For me, there is nothing more contagious than reading poetry. Whenever I read it, Iâm writing it very soon afterwards. It might not be the same for you, but I do believe that trying to write poetry is very good for our writing generally. Because many forms of poetry require certain patterns of syllables, metre, rhyme and so on, it gives our writing a work-out, and even if we donât feel our completed poem is very successful, it will have been an exercise in expression, which can only add to our overall writing skill.
