‘Mark Gimenez,’ Lars said, rolling over the words. ‘Where do I start?’

‘From the beginning.’

‘U.S. Navy. His career wasn’t all that impressive, but his test results were. He retired from active service at the age of twenty-eight. Honourable discharge. Went straight into mixed martial arts. Bought a tiny one-bedroom condo with his savings next to one of the premier gyms in the country and put his life into training. He ate, breathed, and slept in the gym. He started winning amateur bouts effortlessly. He went pro. Got sponsorships. Started fuelling himself with an arsenal of designer drugs using contacts he made in the Navy. Racked up a record of 6-0 before I heard about him.’

‘And then?’

‘We thought we’d bring him in and put him through the tests.’

‘Reflexes?’

‘Everything.’

‘And?’

‘He’s off the charts in almost every aspect you can think of. We did everything. The EEG scan was unbelievable. His brain lit up like a Christmas tree. We put electrodes on his scalp and took him through a wide range of threat assessments, and he reacted so fast we almost couldn’t believe he was human. And he’d just spent three years drilling boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and combat sambo every single day. He was a machine. No hint of an exaggeration.’

‘Combat sambo?’

‘Originated in Russia. The Dagestanis took it and made human weapons out of it. It’s a hybrid of catch wrestling and all the full-contact combat aspects of mixed martial arts. Highly effective at neutralising and breaking down another human being. We’re thinking of introducing it to Black Force training.’

‘Thought it sounded like bullshit.’

‘Far from it. In fact, Gimenez showed us exactly what he could do with it. It was astonishing.’

‘Wrestling? So it uses leverage?’

‘If Gimenez gets his hands on you, you’re not going anywhere. Try to get to your feet and he’ll sap the energy right out of you.’

‘Doesn’t matter. We can shoot him in the head.’

‘We might have to.’

‘I thought you were against that.’

‘I was against it when I thought you could get the jump on this Joker guy in hand-to-hand combat. I didn’t realise it was Gimenez, and I didn’t realise what he knew. We might just have to eliminate him and accept the consequences.’

‘The information will come out. You know it will. I can’t believe he knows all of that…’

‘He probably knows more. Rwanda will be the tip of the iceberg.’

‘So what do we do? We shoot him dead the next time we see him and his minions release a flood of sensitive info. How do we fight that?’

‘We suppress it as best we can, and then we release a mountain of false intel at the exact same time. Stuff so ridiculous no-one will believe it. And we feed that to the papers as the real facts are coming out. And then no-one will know truth from fiction. It’ll all be swept under the rug if we get the release schedule right.’

‘Sounds like you’ve done this before,’ Rollins noted wryly.

‘I’ve done a lot of things,’ Lars mused.

‘I have another idea.’

‘And what might that be?’

‘This guy has a personal vendetta against Black Force.
