CHAPTER 19
With his hands cuffed behind him, his back to the cab, and Savio seated next to him, Kang sat in a well-used blue pickup truckâs open bed facing a glaring AK-armed younger man seated against the tailgate. The other two younger armed men who took him from the cell sat inside the truck.
The jailâs exterior view offered more cracked, aged white plaster, but in an empty lot beside the building, several men worked to construct a new, concrete block, large doghouse-sized addition without windows.
The loud muffler growled again as the truck drove through the little village. Only a few elderly residents walked the dirt streets.
The truck exited the village and moved down a single-lane dirt road with planted fields to the left and a wide, dark, green-colored river to the right.
Kang spoke to Savio over the muffler noise. âWhat river is that?â
Savio answered. âThe Uruguay.â
âWhy does Argentina have a river named after Uruguay?â
âThe river is the border. Uruguay is on the other side. But we should not be seen talking together. Even though our companion back here speaks no English, he may report we are scheming together.â Savio grinned. âAs in a plot to help you escape.â
âUnderstood.â Kang grinned. âWeâll scheme and plot my escape later when you bring me my lunch.â
After about a kilometer, they came to a larger, one-story, newer red brick building surrounded by dense jungle and pulled into the parking lot.
âWhatâs this place?â Kang said.
Savio answered. âOur new village school. We built it ourselves, and we are very proud of it.â
The truck parked outside the schoolâs main entrance, and the guard in the truck bed dropped the tailgate, jumped out, and motioned for Kang to do the same.
He complied with Savio, helping to steady his jump in his handcuffed state.
The guard led on with Kang and Savio trailing.
The other armed men exited with their weapons and followed.
They entered a modern-style school with a polished linoleum-floored foyer, which opened to several polished linoleum-floored hallways hosting classrooms.
The guard opened the first door to the right in the foyer. They all stepped into an officeâprobably used by the schoolâs masterâfeaturing a large office desk, several filing cabinets, white walls covered with framed photos of students and school activities, and a brown cloth couch occupied by two attractive young ladies in short tops and short skirts both in a state of inebriation sitting on each side of a thin, early 30s Hispanic male with short black hair and a black goatee wearing Kangâs cobalt blue suit.
The three armed men took positions behind Kang, blocking the door.
Savio addressed Kang. âThis is the boss.â
Kang viewed the boss and gave a mocking nod of approval. âMy suit doesnât look bad on you. For a custom fit, tell your tailor to take up the sleeves a lot and take in the crotch a lot more.â
Savio shot Kang a nervous glance. âAre you sure you want me to tell the boss that?â
Kang glared at the boss. âDo it.â
Savio translated.
The boss forced a little smile and spoke.
