QUINN

The light in the bathroom is way too bright. Or maybe it is the fact that I got back to my room just before the sun was coming up. I slept in. But it isn’t enough, I need more sleep, but apparently, I’m not getting any more. I throw on a hoodie over my pajamas and walk into the hallway.

“Quinn?”

I freeze in place, confusion written all over my face. Why is Mrs. Fleming calling me?

As I walk down the stairs, I see Mrs. Fleming, and next to her is a bouquet of mysterious black roses resting on a small table in the foyer. I approach the roses and notice that there is no card or note attached to them.

“Who are these for?” I ask, not sure if I’m directing my question to Mrs. Fleming. I reach out and brush my fingertips against the soft petals. Who would send someone black roses? And why not leave a note to tell the person who sent them?

“I’m not sure. I assumed they were for you,” Mrs. Fleming says as she studies the flowers.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen flowers like this before.”

“Me either. In all my years working here, never.” Mrs. Fleming shakes her head and I notice that she looks worried. “Black roses aren’t a good sign.”

I know that, but I’m curious about what she has to say. “Why? What do they mean?”

Mrs. Fleming hesitates, her gaze drifting around the room and landing anywhere but on me or the flowers. “They can mean many things, but here, they are often seen as a bad omen. A warning of sorts.”

I let out a deep breath. “A warning against what?”

“It could be a multitude of things.”

The silence that passes between us makes me wonder if we are thinking the same thing. The roses only came when I started snooping around.

“Have you told Elliott about this?” I ask.

Mrs. Fleming glances toward the entrance, her face tightening. “He is in a meeting right now, but should be out soon.”

Before I can respond, the doorbell rings and both Mrs. Fleming and I share a look with one another. Apparently neither one of us is expecting anyone. She walks to the door and opens it. I’m surprised to see Joanna, and in her hand is a vibrant red scarf. Did it belong to Laura?

“I found this in my home,” she says as her eyes dart between the roses and the scarf. “I think she might have left it at my house.”

That is strange because Elliott told me that the last time he saw Laura, she had the scarf on.

“When was Laura last at your house?”

Joanna hesitates for just a moment, her gaze shifting to mine before she speaks. “She visited a few days before she disappeared. She wanted to discuss something with me.”

“What?” I ask, my voice sharper than I intend. How could she wait to give this information? Why is she lying if Laura had the scarf on when she went missing?

Joanna looks like she’s debating with herself about what she should and shouldn’t say.
