Chapter Thirteen: Melkorka

Melkorka had finally found her sea legs. She was happy to sit on the edge of the longship, watching the waves as they crashed along the sides of the wooden vessel, even in inclement weather.

In fact, she now loved watching the water as she leaned far out over the edge of the vessel. Hoskuld had taught her the parts of the ship and explained how the ropes and sails worked. She took in all of the information, excited to be learning something entirely new.

If she were to be a part of his life and, if she were to travel with him in the future, she needed to know these things. But, more than that, she wanted to know everything about him. If he was interested in something, then so was she.

Never in her wildest dreams would she have been able to learn such things or to be introduced to them. Melkorka hugged herself tightly as she watched the land approach. No, her life had struck out entirely different from what she had imagined while growing up in Eriu. She couldn’t believe just how excited she was to be exactly where she was right now.

Melkorka wondered at how their first meeting would go. Would Jorunn be excited at Hoskuld’s return? Would she rush at him and throw her arms around his neck, kissing him and suggesting they be alone for a while?

She blushed at the thought. They had been together a lot during the voyage. Melkorka was voracious when it came to knowing him in such a manner and she no longer cared what the others thought as they captured quiet moments aside from the main group.

Little had she known that she would be that interested in laying with a man. Previously, growing up, she had not really thought much about what people did within the marital bed beyond knowing that it happened. She had not pursued the idea as many women of her age had.

In fact, it seemed to be all that they wanted to talk about. When it would happen, how, and with whom. Melkorka had kept out of these conversations, thinking that sex was not anything more important other than a means by which to have children.

Now, though, she suddenly understood the mass appeal of it. She knew why men were always sidling up to women, making lewd comments and gestures in order to attempt to woo them, and why women allowed it.

Melkorka couldn’t understand why Jorunn wasn’t interested in Hoskuld. He was attentive and affectionate as well as being proudly aggressive when required. Or, perhaps Hoskuld was underestimating Jorunn’s reaction to him.

She tried not to dwell on this idea too often. As her hand reached out to trail through the icy water,
