CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

The following day was a Tuesday, but Elaine didn’t ring with an update and nor did she ring the day after. Claire became increasingly anxious, and it was late afternoon on Friday when she finally called.

“Hi, Claire, sorry I haven’t been in touch. It’s all been a bit grim, to be honest, and we’ve been frantic with worry.”

“Why? What’s happened? Is—”

“Jess had a ruptured spleen. She almost died. They had to take her down for emergency surgery Monday night.”

“Oh my God. Is she alright now?”

“She is, but it was a close-run thing. She’s been in intensive care for the last two days and it was only this morning that they decided she was well enough to move onto one of the general wards.”

“Poor Jess. Can I come and see her?”

“Yes, it should be fine to see her now. I’m sure she’d love to see you.”

“Right. Well, I’ll try and pop in tomorrow afternoon, if that’s okay. Are you sure she’s well enough to see people now?”

“She’s fine, honestly.”

“Great. Well, I’ll see her tomorrow, then. Which ward is she on, by the way?”

“F6.”

“Okay, great. Thanks, Elaine.”

She ended the call, her heart beating furiously. Elaine hadn’t told her, but she knew they would have had to remove her spleen. The spleen was an important organ, but it was possible to live without one, other organs in the body, including the liver, adapting to take over many of its functions. The point was, she had almost died and if she had, it would have been Claire’s fault. How was she supposed to sit beside the bed of a woman who not only had been having an affair with her husband, but who she had also almost killed?
