Chapter 11
That night, I went home with the full expectation that I wouldnât sleep a wink, and that was exactly what happened. I laid in my spacious, wonderfully comfortable bed and stared up at the ceiling for most of the night while the thoughts in my mind raced round my head like horses in the Derby.
Whoâd killed Steven Bloom? It was a question that had haunted me all the way through the day and had carried on into the depths of the night.
I imagined Clement LeBlanc in his cell down at the police precinct and wondered whether he thought heâd ever be free and back in his beloved restaurant. I couldnât fail him, and I tried to send him a few reassuring thoughts. I didnât really believe that Clement would somehow hear my mental messages, but at least it offered me some comfort.
I woke up at the crack of dawn and laid in bed for another few minutes in the naive hope of getting five more minutes. But the sunlight that spilled in through the window made that impossible, so I hauled my weary bones out of bed and shuffled down the hallway to the bathroom.
Once I was clean and reasonably presentable, I rambled into the kitchen to prepare my usual morning coffee. While the machine perked away, I opened my laptop and started my research into Sylvie Cadieux, Geneve Abreo, and Odette Bois, the Voodoo Queens that Enzo the pickpocket had named for me. I simultaneously felt that I was totally wasting my time, but also that this was an itch I had to scratch if for no other reason than I could mark it off my mental list and move on with the investigation.
I started with Odette Bois, but for once, Google produced almost no results. The only hit I did get was an extremely out of date website called âOdette Bois.comâ that had been made over a decade ago, and which had practically no information on it. Even the contact page was a barren wasteland and provided no way for me to contact her. I poked around on the few pages that were left and decided that there had probably been a lot more when the site had first been built, but someone had gone to a lot of trouble to scrub just about everything about Odette from the web.
âOnto the next,â I sighed as I typed in Geneve Abreoâs name.
This time, there were no results at all. It was as if the woman didnât exist, which given the source of my information, probably wasnât that surprising. Still, it was hard not to be disappointed at the thought that Enzo may have lied to me and that Iâd have to find some other way to track down the current leaders of the various sects.
With a sigh, I typed in the last name on the list, Sylvie Cadieux. I crossed my fingers that I would get something of use on her, or else this was about to be
