Chapter 14

“Keep cameras on him!” Ross shouted.

Bruce contorted in agony inside the smoky tube. Green energy surged downward from the base of his skull, flowing down his face and neck, shimmering in his arms.

Betty struggled to her knees, staring up at the overpass. An arm and hand slapped onto the glass, clawing at it desperately. The hand glowed green, and the whole arm swelled, plumping with thick muscle before sliding back into the smoke. Bruce howled in anguish as he changed. His foot, green and throbbing, exploded out of his brown leather boot.

Everyone watched the tube as the smoke churned. A huge shadow shifted in the smoke, rising with his back to them. The enormous creature turned and spread wide his massive arms. He smashed his fists into the glass, and the windows along the whole tube shattered. Smoke poured out, and the soldiers could see the giant, green creature, packed from head to toe with rounded bricks of solid muscle. He snarled and leaped to the ground, smoke trailing behind him. When he landed, with one knee bent, the ground trembled from the impact.

The Hulk slowly rose to his full, gargantuan height, and all the soldiers on the field took a step backward.

Sparr's jaw dropped. “This was not in the recruitment video,” she said with a gasp.

With three powerful strides, The Hulk cleared the courtyard, pounding toward the open field. He spotted Betty on the ground, with General Ross beyond her, and he roared with rage, shaking his boulder-size fists in the air.

“Were going to Bravo,” Ross instructed. “Move him toward the cannons. Keep your cool. Alpha Team, hit him with everything you've got.”

A barrage of machine-gun fire pounded into the beasts right flank. Six soldiers with assault rifles stood near the metal sculpture, shooting along with another commando using a machine gun on a tripod.

The creature threw up an arm to ward off the stinging rounds. Instead of being driven left, the creature turned and charged toward the statue. He raised his hand like a shield, heavy rounds pounding into his palm and raking down his legs. But he didn't stop storming ahead. The soldiers scattered as he got closer.

“Get Betty out of there!” Sparr commanded the rangers. They grabbed her and hustled her away.

Ross swore softly, watching as the giant moved in the wrong direction. “Get that fifty on him!” he instructed. “Move!”

The Humvee with the .50-caliber gun on its roof accelerated toward the sculpture. As it pulled up alongside the giant, the gunner opened fire.

The creature kept running, pelted by bullets. Then suddenly he vanished. The gunner in the Humvee peered around, bewildered by The Hulks disappearance.

The creature had leaped straight up. He landed with an earthshaking thump in front of the Humvee and walloped his fists down into the vehicles engine block. The Humvee jacked up, like a skateboard. The Hulk raised his fists high, and smashed the front of the vehicle again, crushing its hood into the ground.

He grabbed the Humvee and heaved it
