Tom woke up at 1:00 a.m. âOh, crap. I have to get out of here.â
Sybil snuggled close beside him, enjoying the feel of his warm skin against hers. She put a possessive arm around him. âWhy? Arenât you comfortable?â She hugged him close. âI feel better than I have in ages.â
âThe JLTV. Itâs parked outside. Everybody on base knows Iâm your driver. If anyone recognizes it, theyâll know Iâve spent the night here. The military is fussy about stuff like that. Iâd better get back to the barracks, or theyâll assign someone else to be your chauffeur.â
Sybil turned on a light, partly so he could find his clothes, mostly so she could watch him dress. âI hope you saved some energy for tomorrow. It could be a busy day.â She wondered if they would have time to have a relaxed meal together tomorrow. It all depended on the virus.
He gathered her in his arms and kissed her. âIâll pick you up around eight,â he said and left.
Sybil stretched and luxuriated in the warm, exhausted feeling. It was nice to have someone to care about again. She hoped he cared as much for her. He seemed to, but if he didnât, sheâd take that chance. Better to enjoy a false romance than no romance at all. She didnât really worry about Tom. He didnât seem like the love-âem-and-dump-âem kind of guy. There was more brain behind those lovely brown eyes than most men had. Then again, Einstein had been a famous philanderer. More importantly, would Tom make the dinners or be satisfied with take-out?
She overslept and didnât wake until Tom knocked on her door. It took time to relinquish her sexy dream and face her cold room. She dragged herself to the door, opened it, and apologized. Odd. Now that they werenât in the throes of making love, she felt shy around him, dressed only in a patched robe, worn slippers, and tangled mousey hair. She collected the clothes sheâd need and hauled them to the bathroom where she could dress in peace after she showered. It also allowed her to put on her makeup in private. That seemed important now.
She told him to make coffee while she got dressed. That would keep him busy. It normally wouldnât take that long, but heâd have to locate everything in the efficiency apartment.
When she came out, dressed and makeup applied, Tom looked at his watch. âIâve had my coffee. Hereâs a thermos you can take with us. Grab a roll or something else to eat on the way. Weâre going to be late.â
The ride to Kirby had more bounces in it today. Tom was hurrying.
âI donât have early meetings today, Tom,â Sybil said. âYou can slow down. Itâll give my butt a rest.â She adjusted herself in her seat.
âItâs easier to plow through these drifts if we keep moving right along. After your meeting at the hospital, whatâs our itinerary today?â
She told him theyâd stop in Kirby for half an hour to check with Dr.
