Tom woke up at 1:00 a.m. “Oh, crap. I have to get out of here.”

Sybil snuggled close beside him, enjoying the feel of his warm skin against hers. She put a possessive arm around him. “Why? Aren’t you comfortable?” She hugged him close. “I feel better than I have in ages.”

“The JLTV. It’s parked outside. Everybody on base knows I’m your driver. If anyone recognizes it, they’ll know I’ve spent the night here. The military is fussy about stuff like that. I’d better get back to the barracks, or they’ll assign someone else to be your chauffeur.”

Sybil turned on a light, partly so he could find his clothes, mostly so she could watch him dress. “I hope you saved some energy for tomorrow. It could be a busy day.” She wondered if they would have time to have a relaxed meal together tomorrow. It all depended on the virus.

He gathered her in his arms and kissed her. “I’ll pick you up around eight,” he said and left.

Sybil stretched and luxuriated in the warm, exhausted feeling. It was nice to have someone to care about again. She hoped he cared as much for her. He seemed to, but if he didn’t, she’d take that chance. Better to enjoy a false romance than no romance at all. She didn’t really worry about Tom. He didn’t seem like the love-’em-and-dump-’em kind of guy. There was more brain behind those lovely brown eyes than most men had. Then again, Einstein had been a famous philanderer. More importantly, would Tom make the dinners or be satisfied with take-out?

She overslept and didn’t wake until Tom knocked on her door. It took time to relinquish her sexy dream and face her cold room. She dragged herself to the door, opened it, and apologized. Odd. Now that they weren’t in the throes of making love, she felt shy around him, dressed only in a patched robe, worn slippers, and tangled mousey hair. She collected the clothes she’d need and hauled them to the bathroom where she could dress in peace after she showered. It also allowed her to put on her makeup in private. That seemed important now.

She told him to make coffee while she got dressed. That would keep him busy. It normally wouldn’t take that long, but he’d have to locate everything in the efficiency apartment.

When she came out, dressed and makeup applied, Tom looked at his watch. “I’ve had my coffee. Here’s a thermos you can take with us. Grab a roll or something else to eat on the way. We’re going to be late.”

The ride to Kirby had more bounces in it today. Tom was hurrying.

“I don’t have early meetings today, Tom,” Sybil said. “You can slow down. It’ll give my butt a rest.” She adjusted herself in her seat.

“It’s easier to plow through these drifts if we keep moving right along. After your meeting at the hospital, what’s our itinerary today?”

She told him they’d stop in Kirby for half an hour to check with Dr.
