An enactive approach to modeling the evolution of social complexity would pose new problems of formalization, but not, I suspect, insurmountable ones. Perhaps, as with inclusive fitness and group selection, there would be no difference in formal descriptive power between enactive and individual-first models. Perhaps, rather, there would be an epistemological difference, a difference in what felt salient—not to say what felt possible.
