Chapter Eleven

“The lack of Ilamantium in Vail has become a problem. While my specialists and I have our own weapons, if we are to build a new Order we will need a larger source of it. The Elders of our old village have hoarded away the power for too long. It would be much better served here in Vail.”

The weather grew colder as the weeks passed. The air became crisper, leaves changed colors, and the training grew more difficult. Every day, Gorran and Silva came up with a new way to torture us, and every night we spent our free time in the Furnace, carving channels for Ilamantium to flow through by holding onto the poles.

Reese and I had grown inseparable during this time. Kimber occasionally would sit with us and say a few words, but only if no other initiates were around. I figured she didn’t want to get shunned for hanging out with a crumb. And to be honest, I didn’t blame her. Even though it annoyed me she always seemed to act differently around Reese and me. The quicker we carved the pathways, the sooner we could start the real training, and we were determined to be the first to do it. We arrived at the poles to find Esben already there, his hands on two poles and his mouth open in a silent scream.

“Mind if we join you?” I asked after he had let go of the poles.

“Do whatever you want, worm. Just don’t talk to me.”

I sighed and settled in front of one of the poles. With a deep breath, I cleared my mind and placed my hands on the Ilamantium. The now familiar searing pain coursed up my arms and into my chest. The burning as the power tunneled its way through my body didn’t get any less, but I noticed my ability to manage the pain had greatly improved. I could now hold the pole for nearly five minutes at a time until the pain grew too severe. However, no matter how hard I tried, I never had another vision of my mother. I wanted so badly to see her face again, to hear her voice and hug her. The dangling hope that I
