We piled onto the half-empty coach. Liza had changed from a cotton dress into beige shorts and a tank top, her hair plaited down one side like she was Lara Croft. We all wore trainers and each carried a backpack with water, sun cream and snacks to keep us going. As we drove, the rep at the front stood swaying with the movement of the vehicle, microphone in hand as she gave a brief history of Dikteon cave, famous due to it being the place where Zeus was born and garnering thousands of visitors a year.
The journey took around an hour and once the tour guide finished, I put in my AirPods to drown out the sound of Liza moaning about her mosquito bites. Ryan sulked as he stared out of the window and I was glad he wasnât spending the journey bending my ear, trying to convince me to stay with him. As the Stereophonics blasted into my ears, I closed my eyes, mentally preparing a list in my head of what I had to do when I got home. Salvage what we could â if the house was safe to enter â pack, go to Mumâs and contact the insurance company. All of the documentation was downstairs in a cupboard and I had no idea if it had gone up in smoke. Then Ryan and I could sit down and have a frank discussion about finances, exactly how much heâd screwed us over and what we were going to do about it. It still didnât add up; a huge tax bill and cost of materials increasing meant theyâd never factored in any contingency in their budgeting. Either that or they hadnât been paying tax correctly from the outset. It wouldnât surprise me if Ryan had been trying to dodge it. Also, there was the mystery of Bobbyâs inheritance. Did it exist if Liza knew nothing about it or had he kept it a secret from her to plough straight into the plumbing business? It seemed both of our husbands might be keeping secrets from us.
Sensing the coach coming to a stop, I opened my eyes as Ryan made to stand, ushering me into the aisle.
âWeâre here.â
I yawned, recoiling as the heat hit me once I descended the steps of the coach.
The rep made payment for our group, telling us she would be waiting with the coach when we came back and we hiked north towards the entrance of the cave. The humidity was stifling and it was slow-going. My muscles ached from lack of sleep and Iâd consumed half of my water before we reached the top, T-shirt damp with sweat. Liza moaned the whole way, but it pushed me to stride ahead so I didnât have to listen to her whining.
When we reached the entrance, the steps into the first chamber were steep and there was only a rickety metal rail stopping you from falling into the black abyss. As soon as we descended, it was like
