Chapter Twenty-Six

For three days, we slept, ate, talked, and told old stories and lies. It was an enjoyable break after the hell of Houston.

Gail teamed up with Emily to ensure I followed the exercise routine, which consisted of floundering in the pool like a half-drowned cat with Simon’s personal trainer. My previous exercise had consisted of shuffling from my recliner to the kitchen table or the toilet, an Olympic obstacle course when pushing a walker before I finally got rid of my shag rugs.

I can only guess that because I’d graduated to four wheels, the girls had been looking for some other torture to inflict on me. The only bright spot was when my great-grandchildren joined me in the pool. Buoyed with water-wings, smiles with missing teeth, high-pitched screeches, these water nymphs lifted my spirits. Like his mother would have, Richard was busy snapping photos the entire time. I would live on in memory on a jpeg.

It concerned me that my grandson Tyler’s seemed too aloof. He was always standing on the edges of the family group or walking alone on the beach while everyone else laughed and played.

Richard explained. “Her name is Anna and she’s all he thinks about. The only other thing on his mind is the store, thank God.”

Of course, once we all discovered this tidbit, Tyler found himself the center of some targeted teasing by both his parents, Richard and Lilly. And, of course, his Aunt Gail. Naturally, I led the charge. Tyler soon surrendered and joined the family in our get-togethers but only after filling my ears about this jewel that might well have been the inspiration of a thousand sonnets.

After my afternoon naps, I spent time with Rita and the others. Simon and I told them about the job we had thought they might help us with. They seemed satisfied. Of course, Rita had to have the last word.

“Was that so hard? We could have been helping from the beginning if you weren’t so damn stubborn.”

“Careful, Rita,” I said with a growl. “I can always change my mind.”

“Bullshit, Sugar. Simon holds the purse strings, so he’s in charge. You’re just hired help like the rest of us.”

She looked over at Simon, who held up his hands. “I’m not getting in between you two.”

“Man, he’s got you two pegged,” laughed Decker, elbowing Frank beside him.
