BANG. POP.

Everest jumps out of bed, rushing toward the window. I follow right behind; the blanket wrapped around me.

“What’s going on, Ev?”

“Holy shit. Look for yourself.”

Outside, an enormous pine tree has fallen across the driveway, taking down the power lines with it. The transformer has sparks flying from it and snow is still coming down from the darkened sky.

“Oh, my god. Everest…” I look up at him. “This is terrible.”

He wraps his arms around me, gently kissing the top of my head. “Just means we have no power… and are stuck here until the power company comes out. I would cut that tree but—”

“No. Not with live wires, Everest.”

“Alright, so let’s make a plan. Dressed first. Then trying to find who to call. I’ll get the generator running, too. It’s a big one, so all the fridges and freezers will work. Stove is propane, so we can just light that bitch up.”

I roll my eyes, but give him a slight smile. Grabbing the flashlight, I turn to him.

“Dressed first. You work on the generator and I’ll work on the wood stove.”

Everest nods. “You got it.”

I head down the hall and into the little library where my stuff is. Shuffling through my bags, I toss some fleece lined leggings on with fuzzy socks and warm fuzzy slipper booties. Big old sweatshirt tossed on top and I’m good to go.

I hear the door shut downstairs and know Everest is out in that cold, so I hurry my butt up to get downstairs. Grabbing some wood, I get the fire going again and head over to the stove.

There are long matches in the drawer and I light one of those. Wincing as I turn the knob, I hear it click click click…. Then WOOSH.

“Thank god.”

Looking around, I grab a big pot and toss it on, filling it with some veggies.

“Soup for later. Now to breakfast. And coffee is a no go yet.”

I find some muffins and place them in a small pan, putting that on top of the wood stove to warm them up a bit.

“Coffee, coffee, coffee.”

I go through the cabinets until I find what I’m looking for. Cheese cloth, a funnel, another big pot, and the coffeepot.

Starting the other burner, I put the pot on filled with water as I get my set up ready. Line the funnel with the cheesecloth, get the coffee grounds, and wait for the water to boil a bit.

I put about two scoops of coffee grounds into the funnel and carefully put it into another empty pot. Then I fill my coffee pot with the water and pour it into the funnel.

The cheesecloth acts as a filter and I grin as I watch the coffee form in the pot.

Everest comes in and brushes the snow off of him. “Mmm, it smells good in here. Did you get the coffee machine set up?”

“Nope! Old school!”

He comes over, leaning over my shoulder. “Damn, look at you go.” Everest leans back up and grins. “Fridges and freezers should be good to go now.
