NICOLA

Emily has not been happy with me ever since I cut short the picnic and told her we were going back to the cabin. She’s even unhappier when we make it back there and I tell her to go to her room and start packing her things.

‘Why?’ she whines, stamping her feet too for good measure.

‘Just do as I say,’ I tell her, not in the mood for any games. But before she can go to her room, I need Kim to unlock the door to this cabin to let us in. As she catches up to us, I ask her for the key.

‘No, not until we’ve talked this through,’ she replies in response.

‘Not in front of Emily,’ I say as my little girl stops stamping and watches us, sensing the atmosphere has turned sour again.

‘Fine, I’ll open the door but then you’re going to listen to me.’

Kim steps past us and puts the key in the lock, and as soon as the door is open I guide Emily inside. But she is dragging her feet and it’s because she wants to know what is going on between me and Kim.

‘It’s just adult stuff,’ I say before telling Emily to go upstairs again. I’m relieved when she listens to me, but not thrilled about the fact that she stamps her feet loudly on every single step on the way up. It’s not easy when my daughter is behaving like this and especially not when I know she has done nothing wrong. Her tantrum has only been caused by me unexpectedly changing the plans and cutting our holiday short and not by anything she has done, which makes me feel bad for having to ruin her fun.

The only person in the wrong here is the woman standing behind me.

And it’s not long before she tries apologising again.

‘I’m so sorry,’ Kim says, her voice quaking with emotion. ‘I don’t want this to come between us.’

‘Oh, that’s very big of you,’ I snarl back. ‘You don’t want you sleeping with Ryan to come between us. How about I sleep with Lewis, and we’ll see how you feel then?’

Nothing like a bit of sarcasm to soothe the soul.

‘Come on, Nic, don’t be like that. I’m saying sorry. What more can I do?’

‘How about just leave me alone before I hit you.’

Kim looks shocked that I would even suggest such a thing, but I mean it. If she takes one more step towards me then I won’t be held responsible for my actions.

Rather wisely, she keeps her distance and just takes a seat on one of the sofas instead. I check my watch then and try to figure out how long the guys have been gone and when they might return. But, even in the best-case scenario, it’s going to be a while and that’s before whatever mechanic gets out here to look at the car. So I’m stuck here for now and Kim knows it.

‘What are you going to do when they get back?’
