Chapter 17

Norah held her breath. She and Henry hadn’t talked about labels or defined what this thing was between them. It would be ridiculous to think he was going to declare anything on national television. And she was not in the least bit disappointed.

“About the movie or the awards.” Henry lost his smile at Thad’s personal question.

Thad raised an eyebrow, which must have taken a feat of great strength given how much botox was probably in his forehead. “Yes. What’s next for you?”

“I’m heading to North Carolina to being work on the latest Andrew Miller film. It’s an exciting project, and I’m looking forward to working with Andrew again. Thank you.”

Henry gave Thad a curt nod, and without waiting for a reply, turned them toward the hotel, and started walking. His hand slipped from her waist, but only so he could grab her hand again. Intertwining their fingers, he steered them away from the line of reporters. They made their way forward, the milling crowd and loud photographers blending into one big, cacophonous blur.

They landed in the official Golden Globes photo area. It looked just like it did on TV, except it was so much more chaotic. People—stars, stylists, assistants, photographers, producers, security—scurried about. Added to the stress of the whole thing, and the interview with the jerky Thad Williams, and it was all a little overwhelming.

And by a little, she meant she was completely in over her head and floundering, no life preserver in sight.

Henry bent his head so that his lips were near her ear. “I have to stop for photos. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. I’ll understand.”

No, she was wrong. He was her life preserver. And although he was giving her an out, she wouldn’t bail on him now. And, she reminded herself again, if she wanted to have any sort of relationship with Henry, she needed to get used to this.

“I’m okay. Let’s do this.”

He gave her hand a squeeze, and then headed towards the center of the storm, towing her behind him.

Stopping at photo spot, he pulled her against his side. His arm came around her waist again and she had to admit, she liked the feel of it there. She pasted on a smile, hoping it didn’t look too contrived. Camera flashes popped and exploded around them, blinding in their rapidity. She shook her head and blinked, trying to dislodge the spots growing in front of her eyes. And then Henry slid his hand in hers and they were walking again.

A couple more rapid blinks and the blurry shapes sharpened back into people and objects. They were close to the entrance of the hotel. Almost there, and then she could sit down, take a deep breath and maybe have a drink.

Henry veered to the right, heading toward an alcove hidden off to the side.

Once they were out of earshot, and the sounds around them were no longer quite a dull roar, he turned to face her. “I just want to take a minute and breathe.
