Ben was back on the Clayton’s sales floor working side by side with Amy in the housewares’ department. They were both doused in sweat. Ben was furiously straightening dishes and wine glasses.

“We’re so behind. What time is he supposed to get here?” Ben asked.

“I don’t know. It could be as soon as two o’clock. Maybe later if we’re lucky,” Amy replied. “He might stop at the Elk Grove store first. They’ll call us if he does.”

“Shit. That’s only an hour from now if he doesn’t. Why would the district manager decide it’s a good idea to visit stores on a holiday weekend?”

“They don’t care. Remember? It’s all part of their mission to improve the look of each Clayton’s store. Keep everyone on their toes,” Amy said. “Surprise visits.”

“It’s bullshit.”

“I agree. But that doesn’t change the fact that we’ll both be fired if the store looks like crap when he gets here.”

Ben stopped what he was doing a took a moment to wipe the sweat off his brow. He got up off his knees and paced down to the end of the aisle to catch a glimpse at the rest of the store. Despite their efforts, they still had a long way to go. They’d barely made a dent in cleaning up any of the major department areas.

“What are you doing? We can’t stop now,” Amy said. “We have to at least make it through the next couple of aisles before we take a break.”

“This isn’t working. We can’t do this crap alone. The store is way too big. We need to get the others helping.”

“What others?” Amy asked. “Nearly everybody called in sick today. We only have about five people across the whole floor. A couple of cashiers and Jose in the back.”

“Then we pull one of the cashiers off a checkout stand and get Jose helping out for a while. Just for an hour even. They can work through hardware and toys at least. Then we can worry about clothing.”

“We can’t do that. The lanes will get backed up fast with only one cashier. Come on, we have to do this now,” Amy said. She was getting irritated. “It’s all on us.”

“I’m pulling one of the cashiers off the lane. We have to do it. Okay? I’m not going to kill myself out here like this. I’m already drenched in sweat.”

“Fine. But you can take the blame if the customers get pissed off waiting to check out. You can talk to the district office when they call the complaint line again.”

“We have the self check-outs now. I think we’ll be okay for an hour,” Ben said.

Ben ran out of the housewares’ section and made his way to the front of the store. He didn’t even know who the two cashiers were; for all Ben knew, they might not have ever even been on the sales floor.

Turning the corner, Ben looked up and saw that he was in luck. Erica was one of the cashiers. Ben had trained her on
