The Labyrinth
Birds do not make the sky: the sky makes birds
Fish do not make the sea: the sea makes fish
Tigers do not make forests: forests make tigers
Moles do not make the earth: earth makes moles
And in time ice stalks like a ghost in the southern lands
Dry winds burn the forests and seas flood the plains
All places change
And all creatures in them, must change
That is the law of space and time
Space and time are the palisade between life and death
When a place changes it is a grave that offers life to its creatures
All places are a cradle or grave
There is no place between them where cunning prevarication or power may hide
Creatures are made by the place where they are: it is a law
Only one creature has broken this law: humankind
We make the place where we are
As if the bird made the sky or the tiger the forest
We turn wild lands into deserts or fertile fields
Build cities of wood and baked clay and stone
For a time we are masters of time and space
We rewrite their laws
But time cannot be turned back: if it turned back it would be the date of an execution
If space found a hole to hide in it would be a grave
We are the most bereft of creatures â the most in danger
Because in time the law of space and time must of all creatures judge us most harshly
And sentence is passed
Listen the dark labyrinth turns
We make the place where we are
There is no space between us and where we are
And so we are the place where we are
It is as if a bird had become the sky or a tiger the forest
As if we lived before time and space â before there was a world to create creatures to follow its laws
The dark labyrinth turns
It was written do to others what you would they did to you
We have changed that law
We make the place where we are
So we are the place where the others are
And what we do to the others we have done to ourselves
There is nowhere to hide between cradle and grave
If there is a slaughter house in the city you are the slaughter house
If there is an arsenal you are the weapons
If there is a plague house you are the virus
If there is an execution shed you are the executioner
If you live in greed you are the famine
If you live in superstition your churches are market places
If you live in ignorance you are the violent streets and the desolation that waits at street corners
Do not cry for help: you are the robber and the street
You are the place of your wound
If birds made the sky it would be a nest
If men made the sky it would be a prison
We are the patriarchs who give birth to children
This is not rhetoric or argument or moral persuasion
Earth has no parables â the wind has no sermons
It is the law of the structure of space and time and their creatures
Even the lawgiver who rewrites the laws is given
