An hour later found a table full of Aihuan’s tries at talismans, a napping four-year-old, and six bottled potions. Aihuan was in Rus’s arms again, snoring softly on her shoulder as Rus followed Azure around, the little tape dispenser in her free hand.

“You’re good with her,” Rus said from nothing, her voice soft with awe.

“She’s easy to be good with.” Azure shrugged. It was true. Aunt Carmine had told her to come to 157 Mourning Moore and see if she could find a place for herself, and she had. It wasn’t the place she’d wanted when she heard Rus was back in Moondale, but it was more than she could have hoped for standing on the slick curb of the bus station watching Rus ride away a decade ago.

Rus cleared her throat, her eyes looking away from Azure’s pointed gaze. “You should head home. Cagney will be here soon. I think I’ve got it from here.”

“Do you want me to go?”

Rus’s head jerked back up, meeting Azure’s dark eyes with a wide, surprised gray gaze. “What?”

“I said, do you want me to go? If you want me to leave, I will. But don’t tell me to leave because you think that’s what I want to hear.” Azure shrugged and went back to hanging the red construction paper from the big bay window in the living room at the front. It hurt her eyes to look at for too long, what with the bright green paint Aihuan had chosen to make them. But that was all right.

Rus didn’t say anything, and really, that was answer enough for Azure.

“You should go rest. I’ll finish hanging the rest of these.”

“Someone has to keep the corpses going.” Rus shifted Aihuan so her weight rested on her other hip.

“I didn’t tell you to sleep.”

“Oh.” Rus puffed out her cheeks and nodded. “Okay.” Then she turned and went to the couch to stretch out across it with Aihuan still bundled against her chest. Azure felt her heart clench, watching the two of them in the reflection of the window.

No. There’s work to be done. No time for that, she told herself, and she set back to plastering every window and door in one of the talismans.
