This safehouse wasn’t just a room with cots like the previous one I’d been in. It was designed for groups, and the rooms reminded me of dorms, as they were filled with bunk beds. Each dorm room had a wardrobe full of spare clothes and a bathroom. There was also a living room with sofas and another bathroom, a kitchen, and a laundry room.

Upon arrival, Eldress Cheung placed Jakobe down gently on one of the sofas in the living room. I spent a moment hovering over him, feeling his burning forehead, and talking softly in the hope that he would regain consciousness. I also did a quick search to make sure he didn’t have some sort of tracking device attached to his clothing or in his hair. I suppose it was possible they could have hacked his headset, but based on my limited knowledge of such things, it didn’t seem likely they would have had time for that.

The adrenaline from the fight was starting to wear off, and I felt myself teetering on the verge of a crash. Eldress Cheung told us to get some rest while she cared for Jakobe, and I was too exhausted to ask any questions. Leaving the radio with her, I trudged into the bedroom and fell into the deepest sleep I’d had in a long time. At first, it was dark and dreamless, but as I neared waking, it became almost frenzied, with flashing images of white spheres, green eyes, and explosions. By the time I woke up, the clock on the wall said it was late afternoon. I still felt tired, but I knew it was time to get up.

The bathroom had a shower, so I cleaned up, had a smoke, then walked out into the main room.

Elena was nowhere to be seen. Jakobe still lay on the sofa, and I could hear sounds in the kitchen and smelled the comforting aroma of frying food.

Approaching the sofa, I knelt and put my hand on Jakobe’s forehead, just above his headset. He felt a bit hot but not as feverish as he had been the night before.

“Hang in there, brother,” I said. “You’re gonna be fine.”

After observing him for a bit longer, I walked over to the kitchen and stuck my head inside. Eldress Cheung wore flannel pajamas and had her hair tied up in a bun. I could just barely see a pendant hanging from her neck, similar to the one Elena had, except that this one resembled a cloud. She looked like a typical grandmother, and if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never believe that she had burst through the bonecrete ceiling of a hospital and killed two Black Corpses the night before.

Sensing me, she glanced over. “Good morning, Detective. Or should I say afternoon. Care for a late breakfast of scallion pancakes and congee? The scallions are real. Freeze-dried but real. Grew them myself.”

“Sure,” I said, stepping into the kitchen. “Where’s Elena. Still sleeping?”

“Yes. Please, have a seat.
