BRAYDON (“GOAT”)

I climbed and crawled through lots of tubes in Nym’s Plant, but none of them were like this one. Some parts of this tube are see-through, and the building walls outside of the tube are made of one-way glass so, even though we’re inside a tube, sometimes we can see The Atrium.

The tube winds around the top of The Atrium, not too far from the ceiling. Every time we get to a see-through part, Paris and I stop to look into The Atrium, mostly to check and see if we can spot anyone looking for us. Finally, when we get to the fifth see-through part, we see Liam and Unpleasant come out of the elevator.

We beat and bang on the tube’s walls, and we scream and shout, trying everything we can think of to get their attention. When we first got stuck inside the treehouse, we tried banging on the walls and shouting every time we saw people nearby. But the people just walked on by. Maybe they weren’t paying attention to the things around them. A soft sound can be ignored. I’m sure Liam and Unpleasant are trying to find us. They’re searching for clues. So if we can be heard, they should hear us.

Unpleasant says something to Liam, and then Liam goes away from us, and Unpleasant comes toward us. We beat and bang and scream and shout harder, and she looks in our direction. I can’t tell if she hears us, but I know she doesn’t see us. The wall between us looks like a mirror on Unpleasant’s side, so all she is seeing is herself. She shakes her head and walks away.

But then, my falling hope rises up, because I see the maintenance man who Paris and I met this morning. He’s getting off the escalator on the top floor. For the first time, I get a look at his face. It looks familiar, but I can’t remember where I’ve seen him. Maybe in the hospital or at mealtime. I wonder if Liam and Unpleasant asked him to come help search for us.

But the maintenance man doesn’t head toward Unpleasant. Instead, he walks fast to the wall and quickly opens up the same panel that he used this morning. A second later, the lights go dead.

If the lights are out …

“The treehouse door should be open again!” I say to Paris.

But, if it is open, it probably won’t be open very long. The maintenance man seems much more rushed than last time. We need to get to the treehouse before he turns the lights back on. If we miss this chance, we might never get another one.

“We need to get back to the treehouse,” I tell Paris. “Right away.”
