Two days later, Nicole and I met again as agreed for an event I normally wouldn’t have made a presence at, but since we wanted to set a stage and a story, we show up together smiling and holding hands. The good part is Nicole is a friend, and we have both realized that we are in this together, so we must put up a good, convincing front.

We made the rounds, and I introduced her to a few people as my girlfriend. A few people complimented us. We tried to get used to each other and increase our smiles.

Our wedding is in a week. We’ve managed to convince everyone who asked that it was love at first sight, and we didn’t want to wait because we are so in love, which is the reason for our quick nuptial. Nicole, I soon found out, is very good at selling our story, and all I had to do was go along with the story and not deviate.

We are painting a picture of happiness and hopelessly in love, though we are both dying inside. Luke is still drafting the agreement we’ll sign before the wedding and in it a divorce date with term and parental agreement for our child.

My mom is planning our wedding. Nicole is hands-off and has said all she needs to do is show up in a gown and smile. Whatever my mother decides is fine with her. My dad is all excited and calling all his asshole friends, telling them about the wedding that it’s what the bride and groom want for it to be quick. If only that were true.

Sara won’t speak to me no matter how many times I tried, and I can’t tell her the truth. Doesn’t help when I receive news that she had reached out to Oyin, who didn’t respond to Sara.

Sara went to the lounge and Oyin would not speak to her. I dislike that it’s affecting their friendship, and it hurts that I’ve broken my promise to both of them.

Telling Sara could compromise Oyin’s safety, and I can’t afford that. It’s best if she hates me than unknowingly put Oyin in harm’s way.

I met Nicole’s partner, and she thanked me for agreeing to the baby and the terms. I’m just glad my father didn’t see this side of Nicole. Had he chosen some woman who wanted to stay in the marriage for real? My situation would be different.

Right now, Nicole is a perfect ally that’s about to be my legal wife on paper.
