“I know everything about you,” Marin said simply. “I have lines into both the Israelis and the Central Intelligence Agency. I know how Saul Greenbaum takes his coffee.” Marin smiled a bit at the look of shock on Jacob’s face. “All information is for sale, Jacob, that is why it exists. Seeing as I am now the wealthiest woman in the state of New York, I can afford quite a lot of it.”

“I love your daughter.”

“I know you do, and now is the time when you must do what good men do for the women that they love.” Marin stopped and turned to Jacob. “Specifically, kill the son of a bitch who did that to my daughter.”

“You have my word.”

“And you have my support,” Marin said, retrieving an envelope from her pocket and handing it to Jacob. “Ten thousand dollars, to get you started.”

Jacob’s mouth fell open as he took the envelope, and then after a pause, he stuffed it into his pocket.

“You have been at the beck and call of the Israelis for so long, Jacob. What would you do if it were up to you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Saul Greenbaum told you to wait. He told you to stand down.”

Jacob nodded.

“What if you didn’t need their approval? What if you had unlimited resources? What would you do?”

For the first time Jacob felt a kinship with Marin Sutcliffe. She was like him, she was cold. And she only wanted one thing: what was right.

“I’d kill every last one of them.”
