We meandered through the grounds for about an hour. Visited the elephants. Then the giraffes—my favorite—housed in the African Savanna with the zebras, surrounded by native plants and birds. Now I want to go on a safari. A real one, in Africa somewhere.

One of these days.

This place is amazing. I had no idea. Acres of manicured gardens sit across from the ocean, the foam caps visible from several vantage points. I saw what looked like a wedding rehearsal on the grounds, near one of the restaurants. What a great place to get married.

We’re with the lions now. I connect with most animals, and I’m eyeing one of them. He’s lying on the edge of a raised platform with his paws stretched out in front of him. His golden eyes look wise, like he’s an old soul with something to teach me. They’re framed by a fluffy mane in a tawny shade of blonde that’s almost the same as my hair.

And almost the same shade as that dog I saw earlier today.

I swallow.

Damn.

I was just starting to put it out of my mind, but now it’s front and center again, the questions spinning around in my head. Was it Dolly? Or am I imagining things? Could they have done something to Charlie Yang? It’s going to drive me crazy. Maybe I should tell Ricky. But I’m not sure I want to get any further involved. And if I tell him, he might want me to report it to the police.

“Allie!” Ricky jolts me back into reality.

“Yes?”

“Are you even listening to me?”

I realize he’s been talking to me for a while. “I’m sorry, Ricky. It’s just…” I sigh.

“Is something wrong?”

“No. Not at all. I was busy communing with my lion friend. Sorry.”

“Your lion friend?”

“Yeah. He’s trying to tell me something. I’m sure of it.”

“He’s trying to tell you you’re lunch. You have heard of the food chain, no?”

“Very funny. Speaking of lunch, let’s go get a snack,” I say. “Right after I do this.” With my phone, I record a clip of my furry friend and post the reel to my Instagram.

I wave goodbye.

He licks his chops.
