Here’s what Ellie ended up saying to herself:

Ellie, you can already draw lots of things. There’s no reason you can’t learn to draw a person.

Ellie, take your time, and make mistakes, but keep going. Ellie, you can do this.

Ellie, you are able to do hard things! Remember how hard it was to draw a koala? You figured it out. You’ll figure this out too.

For You to Do

Read the examples below and circle the words or sentences that show helpful self-talk in action.

Abby, you are doing a terrible job! This is not working at all! Do better!

Ben, what were you thinking? This is a mess. You can’t do anything right!

This is really hard to do, but you are able to do hard things. Keep going, Eva!

Spencer, of course you want to quit, but you don’t have to quit. You can keep going.

You probably had no trouble figuring out which words and sentences were helpful and which were not. One way to know is by how they make you feel. Helpful self-talk makes you feel like you can keep going; words that make you feel hopeless or bad about yourself do just the opposite.
